“Our sources report that former presidential aide and Kremlin ‘eminence grise’ Vladislav Surkov has hastily left the Russian Federation. The reason for his ‘evacuation’ was information about materials being prepared that could form the basis of a criminal case.” — Scout’s Diary, Entry #444, March 9, 2026 reported by Jay in Kyiv

There is a particular kind of poetic justice — grim, Russian, almost operatic — in the news that Vladislav Surkov, the man who invented the concept of “managed reality” for the Kremlin, has now become the managed reality himself: disappeared, fugitive, the subject of a criminal case being “prepared.” The ghost-writer of Putin’s postmodern autocracy has been ghosted by the system he built.

For those who’ve followed the long arc of Russia’s information war against the West — documented across seven books of Trojan Horses — this moment lands with the weight of inevitability. Not surprise. Recognition.

The State Magician

To understand why Surkov’s flight matters, you have to understand what Surkov actually was. Not merely a spin doctor, not simply a propagandist. Something stranger and more dangerous.

In Trojan Horses, I described him as “the state magician, clean-cut advertising executive” — a figure who entered that midnight meeting in St Petersburg’s Olgino district in 2012 to survey the first tentative operations of what would become Russia’s global information war. He wasn’t the brawn; he was the brain behind the concept that made all the other operations possible.

Surkov’s great intellectual contribution was understanding that you don’t need people to believe your lies. You just need them to stop believing anything at all. His “managed democracy” — sovereign democracy in the official branding — wasn’t about replacing truth with falsehood. It was about creating what he called the “two-dimensional plane of information”: a flat world of black and white, right and wrong, where inhabitants had no sky, but lived unaware of the chaotic alliances raging in the clouds above them.

He even wrote it as fiction. His 2014 short story ‘Without Sky’, published under the pseudonym Natan Dubovitsky in Russky Pioner — timed, with characteristic audacity, to coincide with the seizure of Crimea — depicted a simulated, postmodern world as allegory for Russia’s information war. Art and operation, inseparable. The man didn’t just run deception; he aestheticised it.

The Architecture of Chaos

What made Surkov’s system so insidiously effective was its internal contradictions — deployed as a feature, not a bug. As I tracked in the Trojan Horses chapters on the troll farms and the Crimea operation, his “non-linear warfare” worked by funding both right and left and centre simultaneously, putting so many competing ideas into the information space that people either fought each other, or simply gave up in despair.

Dominic Cummings studied it. Vote Leave used its principles. The Brexit campaign and the Trump campaign, operating in parallel rather than direct coordination with Moscow, nonetheless rode the same wave of epistemological chaos that Surkov had perfected on Russian soil and then exported westward.

The Surkov emails, leaked in 2014, confirmed what had been suspected: that he was directly scripting the so-called people’s republics in Donbas, stage-managing the “referenda,” calling the shots on the puppet theatres of Donetsk and Luhansk while maintaining plausible deniability. Maskirovka — deception — elevated to a governing philosophy.

But here is what I also documented in the Book Six: World Without Sky section: Surkov understood the limits of his own system. When the Euromaidan began to overwhelm his black operations — the “Euro gay” smears, the neo-Nazi slanders, the firehose of disinformation — he grasped something his subordinates didn’t. “When the problem is reality,” he told his internet guru Rykov, “no amount of spin, no gigabytes of data scattered across their cortex from a screen can match the hard reality of atoms those people on the Maidan are feeling now.”

He knew the limits of what he’d built. And he built it anyway.

The Fall Was Always Coming

Surkov’s firing in February 2020 was the first act of the denouement. Zelensky’s election had broken the script. The new Ukrainian president simply refused to play the role Surkov had written for him — the compliant leader who would quietly cede the Donbas in exchange for vague “Minsk” guarantees. Ukraine’s resistance exposed what sixteen years of non-linear warfare had actually achieved: a frozen conflict, not a victory; a managed stalemate, not absorption.

Putin moved on. Dmitry Kozak was brought in for the Minsk talks. Surkov, the architect of “eternal conflict without resolution,” was no longer useful to a Kremlin that had decided, fatally, to try kinetic war instead.

What the intelligence channel Scout’s Diary is now reporting is the second act: that Surkov apparently didn’t go quietly enough. Materials related to Ukrainian affairs and budget allocations between 2014 and 2020 — the very years of his operation — are being fashioned into a criminal case. His philosophical articles on “Putinism” and Russian expansion, which had continued after his dismissal, have gone quiet. He is believed to be somewhere without an extradition treaty — the UAE, perhaps, or Latin America.

The revolution is eating its own.

What This Means

Every authoritarian system eventually turns on those who know too much. Surkov doesn’t just know where the bodies are buried — he designed the burial system. The troll farms, the Donbas operation, the hybrid interference in Western elections: he was the intellectual architecture behind all of it.

His silence had already been notable. His essays on “Putinism” — that grandiose attempt to theorise autocracy as a legitimate civilisational model — were the intellectual scaffolding for everything the Kremlin did between 2014 and 2022. Now even those are an embarrassment, relics of a doctrine that led Russia into a catastrophic conventional war it cannot win and cannot end.

There is also this: when the system you built starts preparing a criminal case against you, it means the system no longer needs the pretence of loyalty. That is a data point about where Russia is right now — not just about Surkov, but about a regime in the process of devouring its own founding generation.

The “grey cardinal” has fled. The postmodern architect of Kremlin deception, the man who made reality itself the battlefield, is now a fugitive from the reality he helped create.

In the end, he couldn’t manage that.

‘Armageddon Outta Here’

Armageddon is a real place. — a dusty, unremarkable settlement — a few miles east of Tel Aviv. Har Megiddo in Hebrew: the ancient fortress hill that guards the Jezreel Valley, fought over by Egyptians, Canaanites, and every empire that marched through the Levant.

It appears once in the New Testament, in the Book of Revelation, as the location where the kings of the Earth will gather for the battle at the end of time. One mention. In one of the most contested texts in the canon.

Vidal pointed this out in his 1987 essay collection, also titled Armageddon?, written in response to the Reagan administration and the rise of the Christian Right — people who, he observed with acid precision, had managed to convert a geographic footnote in a fever-dream of late Roman mysticism into the centrepiece of American foreign policy.

He found it comic. The comedy, he felt, was protective. If you could see the absurdity clearly enough, you might not go along with the horror. Nearly forty years later, Vidal’s irony may not be equal to the situation.

On 3 March 2026, Jonathan Larsen reported that the Military Religious Freedom Foundation (MRFF) had received more than 110 complaints in 48 hours, spanning over 40 military units at at least 30 US installations.

The complaints — corroborated by the Guardian and Middle East Eye — described combat-unit commanders telling NCOs that the Iran war is part of God’s divine plan, and that President Trump was “anointed by Jesus to light the signal fire in Iran to cause Armageddon and mark his return to Earth.”

The Signal Fire: What the Complaints Actually Say

The core complaint was filed by a non-commissioned officer on behalf of 15 service members — 11 Christians, one Muslim, one Jewish — who described the language as “so toxic and over the line” that it shocked those present, as the New Republic reported. The NCO argued it violated unit cohesion and the oath of service to the Constitution.

When a commander tells subordinates, in the context of a live military operation, that their mission is the fulfilment of biblical prophecy and that their president has been anointed by Christ to trigger the apocalypse, he is not expressing personal faith. He is foreclosing operational judgment.

He is telling soldiers that questioning orders is not merely insubordination — it is opposition to the will of God. He is removing, in a single theological stroke, every check that military culture, law, and constitutional tradition place on the use of lethal force.

110 complaints in forty-eight hours is not a rogue individual. It is a command culture. Something let it in. And that something has a name — actually, several names.

The Long Preparation: Darby, Dispensationalism and the American Rapture

To understand how we arrived here, you have to go back to an Anglo-Irish minister named John Nelson Darby, who in the 1830s developed dispensationalism.

Darby’s system reads the Bible as distinct epochs ending in a final prophetic sequence: Rapture; Tribulation; Armageddon; Christ returns; Jerusalem.

Hal Lindsey’s The Late Great Planet Earth (1970) sold 30 million copies, mapping Soviet Russia onto Ezekiel’s “Gog and Magog” and Israel’s 1967 territorial expansion onto prophetic fulfilment. Dispensationalism had become woven into American political culture.

The key detail that makes the Iran-Armageddon rhetoric dangerous: in dispensationalist theology, Israel is a prophetic instrument. Israel’s 1948 founding was the starting gun. Jerusalem in 1967 advanced the clock. And the Third Temple at Al-Aqsa, followed by armies massing at Megiddo, triggers Christ’s return.

Jews play an uncomfortable role: they return to Israel, fight the final war, and — if unconverted — perish. The State of Israel is loved and bankrolled by American evangelicals not as a democracy, but as a stage set for a drama in which Jews are expendable.

As the National Council of Churches noted in 2007, Christian Zionism treats Jews as “mere pawns in an eschatological scheme.”

A peaceful Middle East is theologically inconvenient: it delays the war.

When US commanders tell troops that strikes on Iran are part of God’s divine plan, they are applying it with operational specificity. Iran is a natural candidate for the armies that gather against Israel. The war is not a policy choice — it is a prophetic necessity. And Trump, by ordering it, has become the anointed instrument.

Hegseth’s Pentagon: When the Temple Mount Meets the War Room

None of this would have institutional traction without the Department of War led by a Secretary who wears the Crusader motto Deus Vult tattooed on his body and describes the current era as “much like the 11th century.”

Pete Hegseth has made Christian nationalism dominant in Pentagon culture. Franklin Graham preached about God as “a God of war” at Pentagon worship services.

Doug Wilson — a Christian nationalist pastor who believes slaveholders were on “firm scriptural ground” and that the United States should become a Christian theocracy — preached there too.

The Department of Defense posted a photograph of Secretary Hegseth with Wilson on its rapid-response social media account. Service members told Military.com they feared professional retaliation for skipping services. This is the context for 110 complaints.

Bannon and Dugin: The Fourth Turning and Fourth Politics

Steve Bannon provides the political-intellectual architecture that converts evangelical End-Times beliefs into governing strategy. His foundational text is The Fourth Turning (1997) — cyclical crises forcing regeneration. At a Vatican conference in 2014, Bannon declared: “We’re at the very beginning stages of a very brutal and bloody conflict… this is how the Fourth Turning works” — treating violence as a sacred cleansing.

After years of sharing ideas, Bannon spent eight hours in Rome talking with thie extreme right wing Russian political philosopher, theologian and activist Alexander Dugin.

They had much in common. Dugin’s Fourth Political Theory casts geopolitics as a spiritual war between a satanic liberal West and Eurasian civilisation. Russia is the katechon — the restrainer of the Antichrist. Liberalism is “Satan’s work.” Modernity is “the kingdom of the Antichrist.”

In my verse-documentary Trojan Horses, I reconstruct the Bannon–Dugin convergence. Bannon asks Dugin if he is too apocalyptic. Dugin replies that apocalypse means truth’s catastrophic appearance. “Yes,” Bannon agrees. “It will be violent, chaos and carnage. But when things fall apart, structures come clear. Everyone finds meaning in a last battle.” This is not caricature. Both men have said this.

That structural symmetry is not coincidental. As I document in The Apocalypse Network, Bannon has been the intellectual bridge between American nationalist politics and Duginist thought for over a decade. The crisis-theology they share has found its operational expression in the American chain of command.

The only problem with the Bannon and Dugin alliance is that Dugin’s vision places Russia in alliance with Iran — the anti-Western Eurasian bloc. Iran is Russia’s partner, not its enemy.

That was their most salient point of disagreement which they overlooked to help Trump return to the White House. And this leaves the Russian alliance in some disarray. But Bannon needn’t worry. There are other forces on his side.

Thiel’s Antichrist: The Tech-Rapture Fusion

What has accelerated this kind of apocalyptic thinking into a real political plan is the disruption caused over the last twenty five years by the internet, social media, and now large language models and machine learning, all loosely bundled under the misleading term artificial intelligence.

Underlying all these original innovations and utopian visions is a reversion to biblical origins and radically dystopian solutions — best represented by the Dark Enlightenment thinkers who emerge out the Silicon Valley. Their various beliefs, from Transhumanism to Effective Altruism all try to reshape the emergence of human rights and democracy. And their most powerful and wealthy backer is the PayPal and Facebook impresario, Palantir founder, Trump supporter and bankrolled of vice President JD Vance, Peter Thiel.

Thiel revels in disruptive benefits and disaster scenarios, but has managed to convert his apocalyptic theology into venture capital.

He studied under René Girard at Stanford — a “prophetic obsession with the Antichrist”, a high-register version of End Times theology targeted at the tech-finance elite.

Thiel has warned in lectures — reported by Fortune in February 2026 — that the Antichrist may appear as a global technocracy promising “peace and safety.” He has identified Greta Thunberg and AI safety advocates as “legionnaires of the Antichrist” — those who seek democratic control of tech. His firm Palantir constructs surveillance infrastructure for the Pentagon.

Radical technological disruption becomes a source of redemption. Democratic regulation becomes satanic. When commanders tell troops that restraint is opposition to Christ’s return, and tech investors see government oversight of AI as Antichristic tyranny, they are reading from the same eschatological script.

As the Religion News Service reported in January 2026, evangelical groups are courting tech elites with this framework.

Fiction and Reality

As Frank Kermode points out in his Sense of an Ending, apocalyptic thinking is endemic to all narratives (except those with happy endings) because how can evil be defeated except in one last battle? How can the Bond Villain be finally expurgated, except by blowing up the whole island? A violent conflagration is a very satisfying form of narrative closure, and play out to the credits.

But Kermode also pointed out the difference between fictions, which only demand a conditional ‘let’s pretend’ suspension of disbelief, and myths and ideologies that command absolute assent and obedience in real life.

What the MRFF complaints describe is not a subjective fiction, but an ideological imperative. This is the operational expression of a theology constructed over decades through mutually reinforcing institutions: evangelical megachurches; Breitbart; Christian Zionist lobbying; a Pentagon under Hegseth; and a Silicon Valley faction that has repackaged eschatology as disruption.

The media infrastructure is what Bannon grasped as weapons — capable of changing not what people see but how they see the world.

Armageddon — Tel Aviv’s dusty neighbour — is where all these converge: evangelical prophecy, Duginist geopolitics, Bannonian accelerationism, Thielian tech-eschatology, and Hegsethian command culture arriving at the same conclusion: a war with Iran is a sacred necessity.

The soldiers receiving these orders are real. The planes flying over Iran are real. The people under them are real. The Book of Revelation was written in the first century CE by a persecuted Christian mystic on Patmos, in a genre never meant for a military operations.

They are trying to turn a fairy tale into an order. Because of the objective premises and the outcomes of the war against Iran are so precarious, it’s unlikely these theological fantasies will survive real contact with the enemy, or public unpopularity in the US.

But in the meantime before the end times, how many will have to die for a myth?

In all the thousands of things I have read as background to Trojan Horses, few are as disturbing and obscene as Jeffery Epstein’s connection to the fake Pizzagate conspiracy which, at a crucial period in the 2016 General Election, he helped to weaponise against the Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton.

The Pizza Codeword

As the DoJ’s release of a million or so files reveals, Jeffrey Epstein’s eating regime was one of almost clinical fastidiousness: sushi, steak, raw fish.

No pizza. Not at Zorro Ranch. Not on Little St. James. His urologist, Dr. Fisch, apparently teased him about it, sending photographs of pizza as a kind of forbidden-fruit joke. Staff confirmed it: no pies graced his kitchens.

And yet the word “pizza” cascades through his emails over nine hundred times — assistants flooded with pizza requests, “pizza parties” arranged and re-arranged, deliveries marked “in the know ;)” to Bobby Slayton in 2014 (EFTA02101291), Red Hook “pizza” port runs in 2013 (EFTA01875288), all of it sitting alongside his erectile dysfunction medications and his raw-fish purism.

It’s pretty obvious that the word was doing something other than describing a dough base with a cheese and tomato topping, though it’s unclear if ‘pizza’ is some other code mocking women or the dietary habits of those less privileged or health aware than Epstein.

What what ‘pizza’ would eventually be made to do — by Russian military intelligence, by a Peter Thiel-funded troll infrastructure, and by a disgraced general who had theorised exactly this kind of cognitive warfare — is one of the more consequential and obscene ironies of the Russia/Trump/Brexit saga I am trying to tell.

The Pipeline

“Cheese pizza” as 4chan /pol/ slang for images of child sexual abuse predated Epstein’s email archive by years.

The code was already live in the imaginations of the board’s users when, in October 2011, Epstein met Christopher “moot” Poole, the founder of 4chan, and heard him describe the board’s capacity for coordinated, emergent, weaponisable behaviour — what Poole called the “hive mind.”

For the next two years, the DoJ disclosures reveal Epstein was a regular visitor to the site. Though the images he forwarded have mostly been deleted, they suggest his predatory instincts also played out online.

Whether Epstein drew any conclusions from that meeting with Poole, or whether his pizza habit was already established and simply happened to rhyme with /pol/’s vocabulary, is less important than the structural fact: the language was pre-loaded in his mind and others. To become a political force, it was waiting for a delivery mechanism.

That mechanism arrived in the spring and summer of 2016, when Russia’s GRU Unit 54777 — the military intelligence division specialising in psychological operations, coordinating with Prigozhin’s troll farms — hacked John Podesta’s emails.

WikiLeaks released the tranche on October 7th, the same afternoon the Access Hollywood tape dropped. The timing was designed to dilute the outrage.

The day after the WikiLeaks dump — 8 October — Epstein forwarded material to Peter Thiel, Thomas Barrack, and approximately twelve others. The machine was ignited

Somewhere in those emails, Podesta’s staffers had used the word “pizza” in the way that people organising political events actually do. It was enough.

An email from artist Marina Abramović to to John Podesta’s brother Tony about a “spirit cooking” art event in her home was turned into evidence of Satanic rituals. Another fund raising email from the owner of the Comet Ping Pong, James Alefantis, led to the pizzeria in Washington DC being identified as the place where young children were being held for trafficking, abuse, and even murder.

Giesea, Thiel, and the Doctrine

Jeff Giesea, a Thiel associate, had laid out the architecture as early as 2015 in a paper for NATO’s Strategic Communications Centre: “It’s Time to Embrace Memetic Warfare.”

The argument was straightforward. Memes function as guerrilla psychological operations — resistant to debunking because they operate on the affective rather than the rational register, most devastating when they tap into pre-existing coded vocabularies.

Thiel was funding the ecosystem that would amplify what /pol/ was about to produce: Cernovich, Posobiec, the MAGA3X PAC’s network of micro-influencers. These were not independent actors.

They were downstream of a set of relationships — financial, ideological, operational — that stretched from the PayPal Mafia’s libertarian right flank through Epstein’s social geometry and into the Russian active measures pipeline.

The result — Pizzagate — was projection of a very specific kind. The man whose private communications contain the most credible evidence of “pizza” as genuine operational code, whose staff confirm he never ate the food, whose urologist mocked him for his abstinence from it: that man’s network helped amplify a conspiracy theory that attributed his own codes and his own crimes to his political enemies.

Edgar Welch drove from North Carolina to Washington with a rifle and discharged it inside Comet Ping Pong, searching for a basement that did not exist. Flynn Jr. was removed from the Trump transition after defending his Pizzagate tweets in the aftermath. Both events were treated as endpoints. Neither was.

The Mutation: Pizzagate into QAnon

To understand what happened next, you need to understand what Michael Flynn believed war was.

Flynn’s theory of “fifth-generation warfare” — developed across years at the Defence Intelligence Agency — held that the cognitive environment was the primary battlespace. You win the narrative first; the physical follows.

This was not a departure from military doctrine but its terminus. Where Giesea had arrived at memetic warfare from the outside, as a civilian intellectual in Thiel’s orbit, Flynn had reached the same terrain from inside the apparatus of state power. Their frameworks were functionally identical. The convergence was not coincidental.

Flynn Jr., who had operated within the MAGA3X orbit and worked alongside Posobiec, was the living bridge between Pizzagate and its successor. His ejection from the transition team in December 2016 was written, in /pol/’s own mythology, as martyrdom — punishment for truth-telling. The narrative was set.

By October 2017, an anonymous poster on /pol/ — “Q” — began dropping fragments written in the precise cadences of military intelligence assessments: insider knowledge of a deep-state paedophile network, a covert operation by Trump and a cabal of patriot generals to destroy it.

The Q clearance — a specific Department of Energy classification — was not a random choice. This was the language of someone who understood how classification systems worked, how military intelligence operations were structured. Whether Q was an individual, a collective, or a deliberate operation, the posts demonstrated an exact understanding of the cognitive architecture that Flynn and Giesea had separately theorised.

The meme had become a mythology. The mythology had an eschatological structure, a hidden enemy, and a military redeemer — Flynn himself, who took a QAnon oath in the summer of 2020. “Where we go one, we go all” was fifth-generation warfare reduced to its affective core: total cognitive mobilisation, individual judgement dissolved into collective certainty.

What neither Flynn’s doctrine nor Giesea’s paper had fully anticipated was the movement’s capacity for self-propagation beyond any operator’s control.

QAnon grew because it had absorbed, at its foundation, something real: the half-articulate public knowledge that powerful men did terrible things to children, that institutions protected them, that Epstein’s convenient death in a federal facility under full surveillance had apparently buried the evidence again.

The obscene operational logic — and here Epstein’s ghost returns — was that it took this grounded, evidenced grievance and rendered it politically unusable by inflating it into something baroque and unfalsifiable. The actual Epstein network, documented and partially prosecuted, was made radioactive by its association with the imaginary Clinton pizza dungeon.

The truth was laundered through the lie until both were unspendable

Stop the Steal and the Capitol

“Stop the Steal” was Pizzagate with the target shifted from a pizzeria to the American electoral system. The structure was identical: a stolen thing, a hidden network of perpetrators, a righteous insurgency of truth-tellers. The scale was not.

Flynn was at the rally on January 6th, 2021. In the weeks preceding it he had been advocating for the President to invoke the Insurrection Act and deploy the military to rerun the election — the fifth-generation warfare theorist, the man who had sat beside Putin at a Moscow dinner, pointing his followers toward the building where Biden’s certification was underway. The mob that followed beat police officers with flagpoles and called for the Vice President to be hanged.

A family friend, the Serjeant at Arms of the Capitol Police, Howie Liebengood, took his life in the aftermath,

The chain of causation that ends at those Capitol steps runs back through QAnon’s military mythology, through Flynn Jr.‘s Pizzagate amplification and his father’s cognitive warfare doctrine,

It is honed through Giesea’s memetic infrastructure and Thiel’s funding of the troll army, through the GRU’s Podesta hack and WikiLeaks’ timed release.

Its strange, obscene origin point is the nine hundred pizza references of a man who never ate pizza, whose own operational lexicon was stolen, inverted, and used to make the exposure of real elite predation permanently, structurally impossible.

His victims are still seeking justice. The men who funded the information infrastructure that made that justice harder to obtain have not been held to account.

And the word “pizza,” deployed with a winking semicolon in hundreds of emails by a man who never touched the stuff, continues to do its work: contaminating the evidence, confusing the inquiry, ensuring that the thing that actually happened remains, for the moment, unspeakable.

A slightly longer, less informational, piece to underpin Book 8 of Trojan Horses

Start with the contradiction. Hold it steady and look at it clearly, because it is almost too obscene to contemplate.

The same troll networks that Jeffrey Epstein helped cultivate — the same anonymous boards, the same hive-mind culture he so admired — were eventually weaponised to accuse his political allies’ opponents of running satanic paedophile rings.

A prolific child abuser sat at the centre of the machinery that manufactured moral panic about child abuse. He routed hacked emails to the very funders of the operation that would transform those emails into evidence of Democratic depravity. He networked with neo-Nazis and tech visionaries alike, apparently oblivious, or perhaps supremely indifferent, to the irony coiled at the heart of it all.

This is not a footnote to recent history. It is the story itself.

The Battlefield Is Inside Your Head

To understand how we arrived here, you have to go back to a paper published in 2016 by Jeff Giesea, a Stanford Review alumnus and former Thiel Capital associate.

His essay, submitted to the NATO Strategic Communications Centre of Excellence, was titled It’s Time to Embrace Memetic Warfare. It was, in retrospect, less an academic argument than a declaration of intent.

Giesea’s core claim was simple and alarming. Western militaries, he argued, were losing the information war. ISIS and Russia had grasped something that NATO had not: that in the digital age, the battlefield is not a field at all. It is the space between your ears.

They were guerrillas — irregular fighters who could destabilise an adversary’s narrative infrastructure at virtually zero cost, with virtually zero accountability.

He pointed to campaigns like #ISISisgay as proof of concept. Viral ridicule, he argued, could exploit prejudice, undermine morale, and hollow out an enemy’s sense of certainty far more efficiently than tanks or missiles. No kinetic force required. Just the right image, the right caption, and the right moment.

These were not idle theories. Giesea had a laboratory in mind. And he had a backer.

The Architecture of the Army

Peter Thiel gave $1.25 million to Donald Trump’s campaign in the wake of the Access Hollywood tape — when almost every other major Republican donor had fled. He spoke at the Republican National Convention. He hosted dinners for the alt-right fringe. And through Jeff Giesea, working alongside the provocateur Mike Cernovich, he helped fund and conceptually arm what became MAGA3X.

MAGA3X was not chaos. That is the essential thing to understand about it. It looked like chaos — the anarchic, irreverent energy of 4chan’s Pepe culture, the gleeful nihilism of the shitpost — but underneath was something carefully engineered.

The operation was structured as a military-style pyramid, drawing directly from Robert Greene’s 33 Strategies of War. It had regional representatives for the Western Pacific, the Eastern Atlantic, the South and the North.

It had an Intelligence Division with six specialised squads: one monitoring Reddit’s r/The_Donald, one tracking Twitter surrogates, one watching CNN, Fox, and Breitbart, one surveilling Facebook, one rating incoming leaks for “high impact/urgent” status and escalating to command accordingly, and one producing infographics and banners for rapid deployment.

There was a Social Media Division with platform-specific units and a Spec Ops infiltration team whose job was to penetrate r/politics and respond to Clinton campaign surrogates. There was a Local Division, running rallies with surprisingly precise cultural instructions — violin music for “relaxed triggering,” clean-shaven appearances, ties, polite demeanour, a conscious aesthetic of responsible capitalism rather than the trollish stereotype. All of this reported upward through a chain that began with neighbourhood sub-groups and ended with a war council holding strategic veto power.

The combat principles articulated in the leaked documents were drawn almost verbatim from military doctrine. There was the “Death Ground” mentality: the idea that TrumpCo was fighting an existential battle while HillaryCo operated from complacent comfort, and that this desperation — this sense of having no retreat — would make Trump’s forces fight harder and dirtier. There was “Childlike Fluidity”: the instruction to adapt chaotically, to redeploy instantly as intelligence flowed in, to treat rigidity as a vulnerability. There was “Presence of Mind”: to absorb defeat without blame-shifting, in explicit contrast to the narrative that Clinton “yelled at people around her” when things went wrong. And there was “Trigger Discipline” — perhaps the most telling of all. Online, the instruction was to shitpost without restraint, to enrage opponents, to flood the zone with provocation. In public, the instruction was precisely the opposite: shower, shave, wear a tie, represent something presentable.

Chaos as a front. Order as the infrastructure.

The Moment It Ignited

The operation’s most successful campaign can be measured with discomforting precision, because MAGA3X kept analytics dashboards.

The #SpiritCooking hashtag achieved a popularity score of 58.3 — the highest of all tracked campaigns. It reached 1,941,551 users. It generated 2,667,174 impressions. It peaked on November 14, 2016, just days after Trump’s election.

Here is how it worked. The GRU — Russian military intelligence — hacked the email account of John Podesta, Hillary Clinton’s campaign chairman. WikiLeaks released those emails in October 2016. Within hours, the anonymous users of 4chan’s /pol/ board — the “Politically Incorrect” board, launched in 2011 and already a breeding ground for the emergent alt-right — began “decoding” the emails’ references to food. Pizza. Pasta. Sauce.

These, the users claimed with mounting certainty, were paedophile code words. Marina Abramović, the performance artist, had once invited Podesta to a “spirit cooking” dinner — a reference to one of her artistic works involving pig’s blood and ritualistic imagery. On /pol/, this became evidence of Satanic ritual.

On MAGA3X’s dashboards, it became a measurable, targetable, deployable asset.

The operation pushed #SpiritCooking and #Pizzagate across Reddit, Twitter, and 8chan, targeting Catholic and minority voters with a message calibrated to trigger moral panic about children and elites. The associated hashtags — #ClintonCult, #CrookedHillary, #HillaryForPrison, #DrainTheSwamp, #PedoRing — formed a constellation of accusation, each amplifying the others, each feeding back into the boards where new “evidence” was being assembled and packaged for cross-platform sharing.

Anonymous users compiled what they called “evidence packs”: images, timelines, and infographics formatted for rapid dissemination, designed to look like research, engineered to feel like revelation. Infowars mainstreamed the narrative on December 2, 2016.

Two days later, a man named Edgar Maddison Welch drove to Washington, D.C., entered a pizza restaurant called Comet Ping Pong with an AR-15, and fired it. He was “self-investigating” a conspiracy that had been algorithmically manufactured and militarily deployed.

The following day, Michael Flynn Jr. — then 33 years old, working as his father’s chief of staff during Trump’s presidential transition — tweeted: “#Pizzagate will remain a story until proven false.” He was removed from the transition team the next day.

But the damage, as they say, was done. Flynn Jr., son of the man who would briefly become National Security Advisor to the President of the United States, had legitimised a conspiracy theory born in the anonymous sewers of 4chan, amplified by a Thiel-funded operation, and sourced ultimately from materials stolen by Russian intelligence.

The Rotten Core

Now we arrive at the paradox. The contradiction that the newly released Epstein Files force us to confront.

In October 2011 — the same month, the same day, that /pol/ was launched on 4chan — Jeffrey Epstein arranged a meeting with the board’s founder, Christopher “moot” Poole. Epstein had become fascinated by 4chan’s power. He saw in it something he recognised: a capacity for mass disruption, for the organisation of anonymous energy toward specific ends. He described Poole to associates as “a cool guy (KID)” worth cultivating, and pitched him and others on the idea of harnessing the “hive mind” for what he called “mass disruptions.”

Epstein’s social world already overlapped with the figures who would later arm and deploy that hive mind. Andrew Auernheimer — “Weev,” neo-Nazi hacker and one of /pol/’s most influential early figures — claimed that Peter Thiel had “bankrolled” his activities after his release from prison. Weev, in the years between 2011 and 2016, networked with Thiel-affiliated figures including Hoan Ton-That, who would go on to co-found Clearview AI. Epstein’s orbit and Thiel’s orbit were not separate galaxies. They were the same sky.

And then, in October 2016, something happened that reads almost like a stage direction in a very dark play. Epstein forwarded John Podesta’s hacked emails to Peter Thiel within 24 hours of their WikiLeaks release.

Read that again.

The man who would become the central figure in the Democrats’ alleged paedophile ring — John Podesta, the man whose emails were being decoded as paedophile code on /pol/ — had those very emails routed to MAGA3X’s chief funder by a real, convicted, actual paedophile.

Epstein, who had been abusing underage girls for decades, who had hosted Thiel in his world of tech-billionaire networking and power-brokering, forwarded the materials that would be twisted into the most viral child abuse conspiracy theory in American political history.

There is no clean word for this. Projection is too mild. Inversion is too bloodless. What it represents is something closer to a hall of mirrors constructed by a man who knew exactly what he was: someone who understood the machinery of accusation and shame, and who helped build the infrastructure that deployed it against others.

Thiel’s own record adds further shadow. His company Palantir, had, at an earlier point, worked on operations targeting figures like Weev himself — anti-Anonymous intelligence work, the kind of thing that traces and exposes the very networks Epstein was helping to cultivate.

That alignment eventually dissolved. By 2016, the ecosystem had coalesced. Thiel’s money. Giesea’s strategy. Cernovich’s amplification. Flynn Jr.’s legitimisation. And Epstein’s networking, routing stolen materials to the operation’s financial centre while his own crimes continued undetected.

What Came After

MAGA3X’s leaked documents noted that the operation would be “reconstituted as a future PAC.” The tactics it pioneered did not die with the 2016 election. They evolved.

QAnon, which emerged in 2017, extended the Pizzagate template into a global mythology of deep-state Satanic paedophilia, absorbing millions of believers and reshaping the Republican base’s political imagination.

The coordination visible in the January 6, 2021, assault on the Capitol drew on the same infrastructure of anonymous boards, encrypted messaging, and structured information cascades.

Election denial campaigns adopted the same combination of centrally coordinated content and decentralised deployment. And the weaponisation of child safety concerns — the framing of political opponents as threats to children — became the defining rhetorical move of the post-Trump right, deployed everywhere from school board meetings to drag show protests.

The memetic ghosts are still with us. As of early 2026, the Epstein Files are still being processed, still being argued over, still being used as raw material for new conspiracies. The paradox at their centre remains largely unacknowledged in the places where it most needs to be confronted.

Digital warriors hunted phantom Democratic paedophiles, empowered and in some cases coordinated by channels that led back to one of the most prolific paedophiles in modern history. The “hive mind” that Epstein admired and sought to cultivate was ultimately turned toward accusing his associates’ political enemies of his own crimes.

Peter Thiel understood something about power that most people would prefer not to think about: that narrative, deployed with military discipline, can be more decisive than any other weapon. What the Epstein Files reveal is that this weapon was loaded by someone who had very specific reasons to keep attention directed elsewhere.

The operation worked. That is the most obscene and grotesque commentary on our politics and media ecosystem. It worked.

On 12 November 2014, amid discussions about hedge funds and currencies, Italian hacker Vincenzo Iozzo emailed Jeffrey Epstein a casual but explosive “data point”. He had heard rumours that Peter Thiel was “bankrolling this dude”—with a link straight to the Wikipedia page of Andrew “weev” Auernheimer. Iozzo warned Epstein that weev was “not only an idiot but also completely nuts”, though he could not confirm the funding tale.

Weev had just walked free from prison that month—his AT&T hack conviction was spectacularly overturned on appeal. Weeks later, his private chat logs (“Auernheimer’s chat logs... he is meeting with Thiel’s right hand man (confirmed by two sources close to Anonymous)“) escalated the rumours into active co-optation. This confirmed financial backing amid Clearview AI overlaps (Thiel-funded; weev chatted CEO Hoan Ton-That).

Weev soon professionalised Gamergate‘s doxxing, swatting and mob tactics into the troll engine that mythologised Hillary Clinton as a “Gorgon-witch-Medusa”.

Thiel dismissed his own Epstein meetings to Joe Rogan as mere “tax advice”. The evidence suggested otherwise.

This email slotted perfectly into Epstein’s reply to Steve Bannon just days earlier: “My nerds taught them that cyber is a weapon... to be used with sophistication.” Peter Thiel—Palantir co-founder, Facebook board member, Epstein associate via Ehud Barak’s Carbyne 911 data venture—fitted the profile of those “nerds”.

Epstein’s leaked correspondence with Bannon revealed a mindset that treated information warfare as military technology. “Cyber is a weapon” was not hyperbole—it described the infrastructure Thiel helped build: Palantir’s surveillance, psychographic targeting, and troll amplification that powered Trump’s 2016 digital blitz.

Vincenzo Iozzo—Epstein’s go-to cyber advisor on blockchain and hacking risks—flagged Thiel’s troll investment precisely when Breitbart began industrialising Gamergate rage. This timing screamed coordination.

In Maria Engström’s Riddle Russia essay, Alexander Dugin says “representatives of Thiel” met him before the Covid-19 pandemic and that a Moscow meeting was “reportedly in the works”; the Tablet magazine stresses “that meeting never came off”. The intermediary-contact claim remains unverified and may be self-mythologising — but even as a claim, it matters, because Dugin is signalling that Silicon Valley’s most consequential reactionary patron is ideologically “legible” to his project.

This is the missing bridge between narrative vibe and an ideological vector.

Thiel is not merely a donor or contrarian investor: the reported “Antichrist” lectures show him thinking in explicitly eschatological terms — technocracy, global governance, and regulation as end-times infrastructure, and “restrainers” (katechon figures) as the counter-force.

Engström underlines the symmetry: Dugin popularised “katechon” in Russian political discourse via Carl Schmitt, and Thiel draws on the same conceptual reservoir. When the same symbolic vocabulary migrates across systems — “Antichrist,” “one-world state,” “restrainer,” “purification through crisis” — the significance is not theological agreement but narrative interoperability: actors can coordinate emotionally and rhetorically without a formal command chain.

By the late 2000s he was pioneering networked propaganda—memes, social-media brigades, and viral videos that fused entertainment with ideology.

Analyses such as “Dugin – Surkov – Rykov: The Trio at the Heart of Putin’s Propaganda” note that Rykov moved in Dugin’s circles and attended joint nationalist events in Moscow.

His outlets promoted Duginist themes of Tradition, sovereignty, and Western decadence.

He acted as a translator of metaphysics into memes—turning Dugin’s eschatology into digestible online culture.

Rykov later boasted on Facebook that he had helped orchestrate pro-Trump operations in 2016, calling it “our great digital operation.”

In effect, Rykov was the engineer linking Dugin’s theology of apocalypse with the practical tactics of information war.

In role-playing games, you create an avatar with specific stats, skills, and alignment. Gamergate and its offspring allowed users to construct a political avatar mirroring QAnon’s puzzle-solving “researchers”.

• The “Based” Troll: Aligns with figures like Milo Yiannopoulos or early Alex Jones. Stats: High Irony, High Provocation, Low Agreeableness. Special Skill: “Debate-bro” rhetoric and “owning the libs.”

• The “Redpilled” Researcher: Aligns with QAnon or alt-right intellectuals. Stats: High (Pseudo-)Intellectualism, High Paranoia. Special Skill: Connecting dots in “research” threads and “breadcrumbs.”

This role-playing lowers the emotional cost of extreme action. You’re not a “real” racist or misogynist; you’re playing a character in a grand, ironic culture war. This allows for plausible deniability (”it’s just a prank, bro”) and moral disengagement.

3. The Game World: 4chan, Reddit as Persistent Worlds

Platforms like 4chan’s /pol/ (Politically Incorrect) board and certain subreddits functioned exactly like a MUD or a game server, as Bannon explicitly harnessed.

4. Bannon as the Game Master (GM)

1. Politics Became a Sport, Not a Governance System: The goal shifted from “build a better society” to “win the daily PvP match” on Twitter or “own the libs.” Engagement metrics replaced policy outcomes as the measure of success.

2. Addiction Over Ideology: The constant drip of outrage, the rush of a “successful op,” and the camaraderie of the “shitposters” created a behavioral addiction akin to QAnon’s “death cult” gamification. People stayed for the dopamine hits of the game, not necessarily for a deep-seated belief in libertarianism or white nationalism.

3. Erosion of Shared Reality: In a game, you can reject the rules and lore. Gamified politics treats facts, institutions, and norms as mere game mechanics to be gamed, broken, or exploited. The January 6 Capitol riot was, in part, the literalization of a raid on the “boss castle”—the blurring of game world and real world.

4. Immunity to Traditional Persuasion: You can’t argue with a player about the rules of their favorite game using real-world logic. Fact-checks are seen as “nerfs” (weakenings of their in-game abilities) by the opposing team. Moral appeals are dismissed as the complaints of “NPCs.”

This is why conventional correction sometimes fails: debunks can still deliver attention, drama, and factional reinforcement — they can become content drops that keep the loop running as Phillips warns.

When the UK government sanctioned Aleksandr Dugin’s think tank, the Rybar Telegram channel, and the Kremlin’s “legal aid” fund Pravfond, it finally named the infrastructure of non-linear conflict, first road-tested against Ukraine in 2014.

The Foreign Office explicitly accused these entities of weaponising “foreign information warfare” — fusing AI fakes, cyberattacks, and disinformation to undermine Western democracies and weaken support for Kyiv.

An OCCRP investigation has already mapped Pravfond’s long game: a decade of covertly bankrolling alleged spies, far-right activists, and pro-Kremlin media across Europe. A new leak adds a fresh wrinkle — “lawfare” operations run inside Ukraine itself. From Kyiv’s vantage point, none of this is a revelation. It’s the Surkov playbook, finally being read aloud.

Surkov’s “Non-Linear” War

One of the major characters in Trojan Horses, Vladislav Surkov — Putin’s political technologist and, for a decade, the system’s dark muse — took charge of Ukraine policy in 2013. As the Maidan protests erupted, he published a short story describing a “non-linear war” where everyone fights everyone, and the front line runs through the mind as much as the map.

As Peter Pomerantsev noted, it was doctrine disguised as fiction. The Surkov Leaks later exposed his office orchestrating politics, media, oligarch networks, “peace plans,” and cyber operations — a full-spectrum assault run from one command console.

This week’s UK sanctions — Dugin’s think tank, Rybar, and Pravfond — align almost perfectly with those original pillars.

Lawfare as Weapon

Pravfond — formally the Foundation for the Support and Protection of the Rights of Compatriots Living Abroad — billed itself as a legal-aid charity. In reality, OCCRP found it financed lawyers for alleged spies and activists, channelled funds through intermediaries even after EU sanctions, and quietly underwrote Russian-language media across Europe.

Leaked documents from Ukraine’s Schemes project describe a “Ukrainian Direction”: a Pravfond-backed “Legal Consulting Center” in Kyiv producing reports on “Ukrainian war crimes,” advising on draft deferments, and pumping out narratives mirroring Kremlin propaganda.

The UK designation notice names Pravfond and its Brussels media fronts as “involved persons” in destabilising Ukraine — masquerading as civil society, delivering state messaging.

Compatriots, Culture, and Church

Behind Pravfond lies an entire pseudo-civil society: Foreign Ministry-backed “compatriot” NGOs, Russkiy Mir cultural centres, and Orthodox foundations linking church and state. The new leaks suggest the same templates ran inside Ukraine: legal cover for intelligence work under the banner of “rights protection.”

Everywhere Russia claims “compatriots” or “Russian-speaking minorities,” this machinery follows — legal aid, cultural outreach, and moral panic, rolled into one soft-power drumbeat.

Medvedchuk’s Media Front

Viktor Medvedchuk, the ultimate payer of Nathan Gill, the Reform UK and Farage confidant, sentenced to over ten years for taking bribes, is also a key figure both then and now.

Within Ukraine, Medvedchuk — Putin’s old ally and godfather to his daughter — provided the broadcast arm. By the late 2010s, his news empire (112 Ukraine, NewsOne, ZIK) framed Maidan as a Western coup, the Donbas as civil strife, and “neutrality” as the only peace path.

Reports by Ukraine’s Independent Media Council and the Council of Europe documented the Kremlin narratives. In 2021, President Zelensky sanctioned Medvedchuk’s networks, calling them tools of Russian “information aggression.”

Trolls, Bots and the Factory Floor

Online, the hybrid campaign drew on Konstantin Rykov, Artem Klyushin, and Yevgeny Prigozhin. The first two are already major players in the first three books of Trojan Horses.

Rykov and Klyushin helped pioneer Kremlin “web brigades” — coordinated online mobs boosting state narratives. The US Senate Intelligence report and Lawfare analysis identify Klyushin as a bot developer aiding Russian influence operations from 2014 onward.

Meanwhile, Prigozhin’s Internet Research Agency scaled that model into an industry — flooding social media with pro-Kremlin talking points during Crimea’s seizure and later US and EU elections. The UK’s 2022 exposure of troll-factory networks shows the same fingerprints still active.

Malofeev’s Faith and Finance

Dugin’s ideology found its banker in Konstantin Malofeev — the “Orthodox oligarch” behind Tsargrad TV and the St Basil the Great Foundation.

Sanctioned since 2014 for financing separatism, Malofeev is linked to Igor Girkin (Strelkov), who led the capture of Slovyansk. His foundations blur charity and covert financing, creating what Jamestown calls a “pipeline of militant Orthodox nationalism.”

In January 2014, his foundation paraded the Gifts of the Magi relics through Kyiv and Crimea — a pilgrimage turned reconnaissance mission. According to Proekt and BBC Russian, FSB officers and future separatist leaders led by Strelkov travelled with the relics from the Maidan demonstrations to Crimea, where the take over of the penisula and the Donbas was quickly initiated.

Put together, these sanctions and leaks amount to an overdue admission: Russia’s war on Ukraine didn’t begin with tanks in 2022 or even “little green men” in 2014. It began with Surkov’s non-linear doctrine — information, lawfare, faith, and finance fused into a single operating system.

Now, a decade later, Britain is only just naming the architecture that Ukraine has been living under all along.

I won’t repeat the cliche that it’s always darkest before dawn. But I will observe we’re approaching the winter equinox — the longest night of the year in the Northern hemisphere — and soon the days will be getting longer.

For more than a decade, Western governments have consistently underestimated Ukraine.

In 2014, many assumed the country would quietly accept the loss of Crimea. In 2015, they expected Kyiv to fold after Debaltseve. In February 2022, the consensus in many capitals was that the government would fall in days.

Instead, Ukraine has turned into a grinding machine that is still bleeding the Russian army dry – even as the Kremlin now cheers Donald Trump’s new National Security Strategy as “largely consistent” with its own vision of the world.

A War Many Times Worse Than Vietnam – and Dozens of Afghanistans

British Defence Intelligence now estimates that Russia has suffered around 1.17 million casualties (killed and wounded) in Ukraine since February 2022. That figure comes from UK assessments summarised by outlets such as the UK Defence Journal and Defence Express, citing a recent intelligence update.

On those numbers, Russia’s current war in Ukraine is already:

That is the backdrop to Bill Browder’s viral post reacting to a headline that would have been unthinkable even a few years ago.

He flagged a story reporting that the Kremlin now sees Trump’s new US National Security Strategy (NSS) as “largely consistent” with Russia’s vision, commenting that he never expected to read such a sentence in his lifetime.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov has since confirmed that reading, saying the updated US National Security Strategy is “largely consistent with our vision” and praising its shift away from describing Russia as a direct threat, in favour of “strategic stability” and a tougher line on Europe.

Pokrovsk: Nearly Two Years, 25 Miles, Tens of Thousands of Casualties

Nothing illustrates Ukraine’s continuing ability to drain Russian manpower like the battle for Pokrovsk.

This is what “success” looks like after nearly two years of slugging it out in Donetsk: Ukraine is still trading territory for Russian lives at a rate Moscow can scarcely afford.

A Booze-Taxed War Economy

The human cost is now feeding directly into Russia’s domestic fiscal policy. With oil revenues squeezed, growth slowing and military spending locked in, the Kremlin is turning to ordinary consumers to keep the war going.

Key measures include:

• A proposed rise in VAT from 20% to 22% from 2026 onwards, expected to raise about 1 trillion rubles (≈$12 billion) a year, explicitly earmarked to fund “defence and security”.

The political slogan “everything for the front, everything for victory” has been translated into a line on the supermarket receipt.

“Civilisational Erasure” Becomes Official US Strategy

Trump’s 2025 National Security Strategy – the document the Kremlin now applauds – marks a sharp rhetorical break with every US administration since the end of the Cold War.

• Castigates the European Union as over-regulated, complacent and hostile to “sovereignty”.

And contemporary coverage generally notes how Russia is downgraded from an outright “threat” to a potential partner in “strategic stability”, while much of the fire is directed at Brussels.

Peskov’s reaction – that the NSS is “largely consistent with our vision” and an “encouraging” basis for future cooperation – is unsurprising once this framing is clear. For a Kremlin that has lost hundreds of thousands of men, getting the United States to adopt its Dugin-style language of civilisational crisis and European decay is a major strategic consolation prize.

But that’s all it is. The net effect is the erasure of US influence across Europe

Musk, Medvedev and the Anti-EU Axis

Into this steps Elon Musk, whose platform X was just hit with a €120 million fine under the EU’s Digital Services Act for opaque verification and poor data access for researchers.

Musk responded with a pinned post declaring:

“The EU should be abolished and sovereignty returned to individual countries, so that governments can better represent their peoples.”

Russian Security Council deputy chair Dmitry Medvedev immediately replied “Exactly”, and Russian state outlets amplified the exchange as proof that Trump-aligned US tech oligarchs and the Kremlin share a common enemy in Brussels.

Poland’s foreign minister Radosław Sikorski called the Musk-Medvedev duo “reckless and dangerous”, bluntly asking who benefits from anti-EU talk about sovereignty and answering his own question: those who want to profit from hatred, and those who want to conquer Europe.

The convergence is hard to miss:

• Trump’s NSS warns of Europe’s “civilisational erasure” and backs “patriotic” parties.

• Musk calls for the EU to be abolished.

• Medvedev shouts “Exactly”.

• Russian pundits and sovereign-wealth types point back to the NSS as proof that Washington is finally “seeing things our way”.

All of this is happening while Ukraine continues to bleed Russia’s army for every kilometre of ground, from Pokrovsk to the Zaporizhzhia front, and while the Kremlin raids the wallets of its own citizens – with higher VAT, alcohol taxes and tech levies – to keep the war going.

The headline story is not that Russia feels strong enough to dictate terms to the United States. The story is that after suffering a Vietnam’s worth of casualties and dozens of Afghan wars in losses, Moscow is clutching at Trump’s National Security Strategy as a political lifeline – hoping that if it cannot defeat Ukraine outright.

But since few people want to live under the oligarchic globalism represented by Trump and Putin, their project is doomed to failure.

Four Posts, One Pattern

Within a few days, four clips and tweets together sketched an emerging order.

On his War Room show, Steve Bannon is promoted in a clip saying the US should ally with Russia because it is a “devoutly Christian nation” and “our true ally in WWII”.

Russian ultra-nationalist ideologue Alexander Dugin writes that Europe’s peoples must “overthrow ruling elites – brutally and radically”, calling Macron, Merz and Starmer a “death sentence for Europe” and warning: “Erase them, or you will be erased. Very soon.”

Elon Musk responds to a new €120 million Digital Services Act fine on X by tweeting that “the EU should be abolished and sovereignty returned to individual countries” – a post instantly endorsed with a terse “Exactly” from former Russian president Dmitry Medvedev. The fine itself is detailed in the European Commission’s decision and reporting by outlets such as the Guardian and AP.

And JD Vance, whose political rise was turbo-charged by Peter Thiel’s money, complains that the European Commission is fining X “hundreds of millions of dollars” for not engaging in “censorship”, and that the EU should stop “attacking American companies over garbage”.

Until recently this might have looked like a loose subculture – MAGA influencers and Russian ideologues riffing off one another online.

But the newly released 2025 National Security Strategy (NSS) uses precisely the same language: warning that parts of Europe face “civilisational erasure” and calling for Washington to “cultivate resistance” and work with “patriotic European parties” against mainstream EU governments.

Bannon and Dugin provide the ideology; Musk and Vance wield the platform power; Medvedev gives the Kremlin stamp of approval. The NSS shows this convergence is no longer just a social-media mood but written into US grand strategy.

Bannon, Dugin and the Cambridge Analytica Pipeline

Bannon’s “Christian Russia” line is the digest version of ideas he has been trading with Dugin for years. As Benjamin Teitelbaum recounts in War for Eternity, the two men spent a full day together in Rome in 2018 discussing civilisational conflict – Russia and America as spiritual allies against a decadent liberal West.

But Bannon’s Russian links are not just theological. They run straight through Cambridge Analytica, the data-mining and targeting firm he helped create and direct.

Between 2013 and 2016, Cambridge Analytica harvested Facebook data from tens of millions of people via Aleksandr Kogan’s “This Is Your Digital Life” app, then built psychographic voter profiles deployed for the Cruz and Trump campaigns.

At the same time:

• Whistleblower Chris Wylie told Parliament that Cambridge Analytica pitched its political targeting toolkit to Russian oil giant Lukoil, a fact reflected in his written evidence and contemporaneous reporting by The Guardian on CA’s links to Moscow and Lukoil.

• A later board-commissioned report and US inquiries confirmed that CA executives discussed US campaign work and data practices with Lukoil in 2014–15.

At the other end of this pipeline, Paul Manafort passed detailed Trump-campaign polling and strategy to long-time associate Konstantin Kilimnik. The US Treasury stated in 2021 that Kilimnik “provided the Russian Intelligence Services with sensitive information on polling and campaign strategy,” a conclusion analysed by Just Security and Lawfare.

Those same services were linked to Yevgeny Prigozhin’s Internet Research Agency, the troll farm indicted by Special Counsel Robert Mueller for illegal interference in the 2016 election.

So when Bannon – former Cambridge Analytica vice-president and Trump chief strategist – now tells Americans that Russia is their natural Christian ally, he is speaking after a decade in which:

• His own data-firm courted Lukoil with election-influence decks.

• Kilimnik ferried campaign insights to Russian intelligence.

• Prigozhin weaponised social media using similar behavioural profiling techniques.

The ideology sits on top of an already-built infrastructure of shared data and information warfare.

Epstein, Thiel and Putin’s AI “Atomic Secrets”

The Epstein network is the glue between some of those Russian state actors and Silicon Valley capital.

The Dossier Center’s investigation “Jeffrey Epstein’s Russian Connection” traces how Epstein cultivated Sergei Belyakov, an FSB-trained former deputy minister who later ran the St Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF). Belyakov provided Epstein with dossiers and access to senior officials; Epstein promised to bring Western VIPs and investors to SPIEF – a forum notorious for oligarch deal-making and kompromat-laden parties.

My reports here and on Byline Times (“Jeffrey Epstein’s Russian ‘Tech Maidens’” plus “Inside Epstein’s Russian Tech Web”) show how three women in Epstein’s circle, Lana Pozhidaeva (Podhizdaeva) and sisters Masha and Victoria Drokova/Drukova, form part of what is described as Putin’s AI “atomic secrets” gambit: Russian elites seeding themselves into US tech PR and venture capital to gain insight into, and leverage over, frontier technologies.

From there the trail runs to Peter Thiel. Estate documents and subsequent reporting show Epstein investing tens of millions into Thiel-linked fund Valar Ventures, making it the single largest asset in Epstein’s estate. Thiel sat on Facebook’s board, co-founded Palantir and bankrolled the political rise of JD Vance – the same Vance now defending Musk’s platform against EU “censorship.”

The point is not that Epstein controlled Thiel, but that Russian officialdom, oligarch capital and US tech billionaires all met inside the same hybrid network – one that treats data, AI and private platforms as strategic weapons.

Musk vs. Europe: From Information Warfare to Regulatory War

The fourth pillar is Musk himself.

In Byline Times, “From Z to X: How Russian Information Warfare Primed the World for the Tech Autocracy of Trump and Musk” I explained how Musk has effectively fused Trumpist politics with the lessons of Russian online operations: buying Twitter/X, restoring banned extremists, and turning “free speech” into a shield for disinformation and harassment.

The pattern is now familiar:

• Musk proposed a Ukraine “peace plan” that would ratify Russia’s annexation of Crimea and force Kyiv to accept neutrality – plans reported and praised in Russian media.

• He restricted Starlink coverage during key Ukrainian operations, privately deciding the scope of a NATO-backed war.

Now, with the first major Digital Services Act fine against X, Musk has escalated from content-moderation grievances to an explicit call to abolish the EU.

Medvedev’s “Exactly” is more than trolling: it signals that the Kremlin sees Musk’s fight with Brussels as aligned with its own aim of fracturing the European project.

JD Vance’s response – framing EU enforcement as censorship and an attack on “American companies” – completes the triangle: US executive power defending a private platform against democratic regulation in another bloc, with Russia cheering from the sidelines.

The Double-Headed Eagle

Taken together, these fragments describe a single creature.

One head sits in Moscow: Dugin’s apocalyptic traditionalism; Belyakov’s SPIEF circuit; Lukoil and other oligarch firms; Kilimnik and Prigozhin’s information operations.

The other perches in Silicon Valley and MAGA-land: Bannon and Cambridge Analytica; Thiel’s data and AI ventures; Musk’s control of X and Starlink; Vance’s political protection.

They share the same torso: a tech-driven, oligarch-friendly, Christian-civilisational project that treats the EU, liberal democracy and independent regulators as enemies to be abolished or “erased”.

The new National Security Strategy places that worldview in black and white – warning that Europe faces “civilisational erasure”, pledging to “cultivate resistance to Europe’s current trajectory within European nations”, and celebrating the “growing influence of patriotic European parties” as a cause for “great optimism”.

That is the double-headed eagle: one head in Moscow, one in Silicon Valley / MAGA-land, but sharing the same body. The four posts at the centre of this report are the public tip of that structure, where the ideology (Dugin and Bannon), the platform power (Musk and Vance) and the Kremlin (Medvedev) finally say the quiet part out loud – in the same week, on the same network – while the White House’s own strategy document confirms it is now official US policy.

On one level it’s just another spicy Musk hot take. On another, it is a perfect encapsulation of the Trump–Brexit–Russia story of the last decade and a half: a former Russian president publicly endorsing the breakup of the European Union, and the billionaire owner of a key global communications platform echoing the old “take back control” slogan in 2025.

From Crimea to Cambridge Analytica

The trajectory starts in 2014, when Russia seized Crimea and launched its covert war in the Donbas. Ukraine was the laboratory for a new kind of “hybrid war”: tanks and “little green men” on the ground, backed by troll farms, bot networks and state media pushing narratives of a fake “Novorossiya” across social platforms.

Within two years the same techniques were redirected at Western democracies. The St Petersburg-based Internet Research Agency built thousands of fake American personas, pages and groups designed to inflame racial tensions and boost Donald Trump in the 2016 US election. In the UK, the Brexit referendum was fought in an information environment heavily influenced by opaque data operations, micro-targeted Facebook ads and a surge of pro-Kremlin messaging from bots and state outlets, all pushing the idea that Brussels was an illegitimate overlord and that sovereignty had to be “taken back”.

In parallel, the Kremlin cultivated and sometimes financed European far-right and ultra-conservative forces, from loans to Marine Le Pen’s National Front to covert support for parties that wanted to weaken EU sanctions and fracture the union from within. The strategic goal was consistent: undermine the EU and NATO, loosen the transatlantic alliance, and isolate Ukraine.

“Abolish the EU”

Viewed against that history, Musk’s line about “abolishing” the EU is more than a libertarian thought experiment. It condenses the political slogans of Trumpism and Brexit into one sentence: the nation-state as the only legitimate unit of sovereignty; supranational institutions as inherently undemocratic; the EU as something done to people, not by them.

Medvedev’s one-word response – “Exactly” – makes plain how neatly this dovetails with Moscow’s long-term ambitions. As former president and now deputy chair of Russia’s Security Council, he has become one of the regime’s most aggressive public voices, regularly threatening Europe with escalation and calling for a remade world order. When he endorses the abolition of the EU, he is not being rhetorical; he is restating a core Kremlin objective that has underpinned years of covert finance, disinformation and interference.

From hacking platforms to owning them

In the first phase of this story, Russia had to hack or game Western platforms it did not own. Troll farms, botnets, data brokers and friendly media outlets all worked to manipulate Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Google’s search rankings. Political campaigns hired firms that blurred the line between legitimate persuasion and psychological operations.

The second phase is more disturbing. Instead of merely exploiting open platforms, authoritarian-aligned narratives increasingly travel through platforms whose owners are themselves geopolitical actors.

Musk is not just another loud account on X. He owns X. He also controls Starlink, the satellite network that has become critical to Ukraine’s civilian communications and military operations. His decisions about where Starlink functions, and on what terms, have already affected events on the battlefield and triggered alarm among Western officials who suddenly find the security of an allied state dependent on the whims of a single billionaire.

When such a figure publicly calls for abolishing the EU – and is applauded by a senior Russian official – it marks a shift from covert interference to something closer to open ideological partnership. The tools that were once hacked from the outside are now, in part, steered from within.

The same war, a new front

The Musk–Medvedev exchange can be read as the latest move in a long campaign with three overlapping fronts:

1. Territory: Crimea, Donbas and the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

2. Democracy: Brexit, Trump 2016, and the rise of far-right European parties nurtured and amplified by Russian influence.

3. Infrastructure of attention: social media platforms, data-harvesting operations, and now privately owned satellite constellations and global networks.

What began as a battle over Ukraine’s territorial integrity has become a struggle over who controls the architecture of public discourse itself. The Kremlin’s goal remains the same – to break Western unity and the institutions that constrain Russian power – but the battlefield has shifted from secret troll farms to the visible timelines and private boardrooms of Big Tech.

In that sense, the Musk–Medvedev screenshot is more than a viral curiosity. It is a tiny, revealing window onto a fifteen-year story: the convergence of authoritarian state power with unaccountable tech monopolies. The war that started in Ukraine’s streets and fields is now as much about who owns the platforms that decide what the rest of the world sees and believes.

After Steve Bannon’s declaration that the US should join Russia in a holy struggle against liberal Europe, the new 2025 US National Security Strategy lands like a manifesto for a culture war over Europe.

In its chapter on allies, the document warns that Europe’s economic malaise is “eclipsed by the real and more stark prospect of civilizational erasure” and frets that “within a few decades… certain NATO members will become majority non-European.” It calls for Washington to “cultivate resistance to Europe’s current trajectory within European nations” and for Europe to “regain its civilizational self-confidence.” (The White House)

This is not just hardball burden-sharing rhetoric. It’s a civilisation-talking, demographic-anxiety framing that could have been lifted from Steve Bannon’s Rome speeches or Aleksandr Dugin’s neo-Eurasianist essays: Europe as a decadent, dying civilisation that must either be reborn on “traditional” lines – or dissolve.

And the “patriotic” parties the Trump administration seeks to encourage are exactly those far right parties which the Kremlin has so amply funded and supported for the last decade.

That worldview isn’t home-grown in Washington. It was first theorised by Dugin the philosopher, funded and broadcast by Konstantin Malofeev the oligarch, and fought for on the ground by Igor Strelkov the soldier – long before it was codified in a White House strategy PDF. The NSS is, in effect, the policy-speak version of the Dugin–Bannon line.

1. Dugin – the Philosopher of “Holy Empire”

Aleksandr Dugin is often described as “Putin’s brain” – overstated, but not wholly wrong. He’s Russian ultra-nationalism’s chief myth-maker.

His core ideas:

• A multi-polar world of civilisational blocs, with Russia as the heart of a Eurasian civilisation opposed to “Atlantic” liberalism. This is laid out in his neo-Eurasianist writings and analysed in work on the Izborsky Club.

• Traditionalism and spiritual war: drawing on René Guénon and Julius Evola, he casts politics as a metaphysical struggle between rooted, hierarchical, Orthodox civilisation and secular, egalitarian modernity. (New Statesman)

• The “Russian World” (Russkiy Mir): a civilisational space that naturally includes Ukraine and Belarus, defined by history, language and faith rather than borders – a frame that makes the annexation of Crimea and the war for “Novorossiya” look like restoration, not aggression.

Dugin’s influence moves through oligarch-funded media and think-tanks, not ministries:

• He’s a leading ideologue in the ultra-conservative Izborsky Club, which Marlene Laruelle calls a “new conservative avant-garde” feeding hard-line ideas into Putin’s third term.

• He serves as editor-in-chief of Katehon, a think-tank / website created and financed by oligarch Konstantin Malofeev; Business Insider notes that Dugin’s worldview is effectively “bankrolled by Malofeyev” via Katehon and its sister projects. (bipr.jhu.edu)

The civilisational language in the 2025 NSS – Europe’s supposed “civilizational erasure,” the need to restore “civilizational self-confidence,” praise for “patriotic European parties” as a source of “great optimism” – reads like a sanitised, Washington-ised version of Dugin’s schema:

• demography and migration as existential threats,

• technocratic EU institutions as agents of decay,

• salvation via nationalist, socially conservative movements.

That’s exactly the frame Steve Bannon has been importing for years. In his 2014 Vatican talk, Bannon told a Catholic audience that Putin is “playing very strongly to U.S. social conservatives” with his “more traditional values,” and that “we the Judeo-Christian West really have to look at what he’s talking about as far as Traditionalism goes.” (Universität Innsbruck)

He even name-checked Dugin in that context, describing him as a thinker who “hearkens back to Julius Evola” and the Traditionalist movement that “eventually metastasised into Italian fascism.” (OUPblog)

In other words: the script the NSS is now using about Europe was written, in ideological terms, by Dugin – then translated into American right-wing language by Bannon.

2. Malofeev – the Oligarch of “Holy Money”

If Dugin supplies the metaphysics, Konstantin Malofeev – a sanctioned Orthodox nationalist oligarch – supplies the infrastructure

Malofeev sits where capital, church and ultra-conservatism meet:

• He built and chairs the TV channel Tsargrad, explicitly framed as a Russian Fox News for monarchists and Orthodox traditionalists. Former Fox producer Jack Hanick helped set it up and was later indicted in the US for working with Malofeev in breach of sanctions. (Vox)

• He presides over Katehon, giving Dugin a paid platform and embedding his ideas in a wider “Eurasianist” network. (bipr.jhu.edu)

• Through his St Basil the Great Foundation and allied NGOs he bankrolls “traditional values” projects – anti-LGBT, anti-abortion, anti-feminist – that connect directly into European and US Christian-right networks and the World Congress of Families. (JSTOR)

Western governments have flagged him as a key financier of Russian aggression:

• The EU sanctioned him in 2014 for material and financial support to separatists in Crimea and Donbas, explicitly naming his role in undermining Ukraine’s sovereignty. (The Guardian)

• US Treasury designations and indictments describe a web of front companies and offshore vehicles used to evade sanctions and continue funding media and influence-ops abroad. (Universität Innsbruck)

Crucially for your wider Europe project, Malofeev is also a hub for the radical right:

• Investigations based on leaked emails and travel records place him behind networking meetings in Vienna and elsewhere bringing together figures from Austria’s FPÖ, Bulgaria’s Ataka and France’s Front National, aligning them with Moscow’s “family values” and pro-Kremlin line. (New Statesman)

• Researchers tracking Russia’s social-conservative outreach show his foundation working alongside World Congress of Families-type platforms that connect US Christian activists, European ultra-conservatives and Russian Orthodox elites. (Vanity Fair)

Business Insider’s profile of him as a media oligarch driving imperial ambitions and doomsday rhetoric sums it up: Malofeev is the Orthodox imperialist oligarch who turns Dugin’s civilisational talk into TV channels, think-tanks, NGOs, paramilitary funding and far-right alliances.

When the NSS praises the “growing influence of patriotic European parties” and calls for the US to “cultivate resistance” within Europe to its own governments, (Wikipedia) it is echoing the very “patriotic” parties Malofeev has spent a decade cultivating: Le Pen, Salvini, FPÖ, and their imitators.

3. Strelkov – the Soldier of “Novorossiya”

Igor Girkin, known as Igor Strelkov, is where this world picks up a gun.

A former FSB officer and veteran of wars in Transnistria, Bosnia and Chechnya, he emerges as a central figure in 2014:

• In Crimea, he acts as an organiser and commander for the Russian operation; Ukraine’s official “Russian aggression” dossier describes his role in creating the so-called “Crimean Army” and leading an assault in Simferopol in which a Ukrainian soldier was killed.

• In April 2014, he leads an armed detachment from Russia into Sloviansk, seizing the city and triggering open war in Donbas; he soon styles himself “Defence Minister” of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic.

The money trail ties him straight back to Malofeev:

• Strelkov has acknowledged working as security chief for Malofeev, providing “security services” during the oligarch’s visits to Kyiv and Crimea ahead of the annexation.

• Jamestown and others describe Malofeev as a principal private financier of the Donbas separatists, with Strelkov as the man who converts that money (and state backing) into actual armed units.

Layered onto that private capital is the Russian state:

• The EU and US have sanctioned Strelkov as a Russian national commanding armed groups that undermined Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

• In November 2022, a Dutch court convicted him in absentia of murdering the 298 people on Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17, sentencing him to life imprisonment for his role in bringing the Buk system into eastern Ukraine.

After his abrupt removal from his DPR role in August 2014, Strelkov is rotated back into Russia and re-packaged as a nationalist activist and pundit:

• He launches a “Novorossiya” movement, appears on Tsargrad and other nationalist outlets, and acts as a lightning rod for ultra-patriotic audiences who think the war didn’t go far enough.

Then, when the full-scale invasion launched in 2022 goes badly, he turns his fire on the Kremlin:

• Strelkov becomes a prominent pro-war critic, calling Putin a coward and denouncing the Defence Ministry’s incompetence.

• In July 2023 he is arrested on charges of inciting extremism; by January 2024 he’s sentenced to four years in a penal colony, a sentence upheld by Russia’s Supreme Court later that year.

He ends up a prisoner of the system he helped arm – wanted abroad for MH17, jailed at home for being too loudly ultra-nationalist.

4. The Triangle – and the New US Strategy

Put together, you get a very clear triangle:

• Dugin – the philosopher
  Writes the civilisational story: the West is decadent; Europe is dying; salvation lies in nationalist, traditionalist revival – especially in places like Ukraine.

• Malofeev – the oligarch
  Provides the infrastructure: oligarchic money, church-linked foundations, TV channels and think-tanks that spread that story, finance paramilitary ventures and ally with Europe’s far right.

• Strelkov – the soldier
  Provides the muscle: the men with rifles who seize Sloviansk, run the early Donbas war and sit in the chain that destroys MH17.

For years, Steve Bannon has tried to plug this Russian triangle into the Western right:

• Praising Putin as a “strong traditionalist” leading an important nationalist movement. (Vox)

• Telling Western conservatives they “really have to look at what [Putin’s] talking about, as far as traditionalism goes.” (TIME)

• Engaging with Dugin’s Traditionalism and casting Russia as a civilisational ally in a global war against liberalism and “globalists.” (The Guardian)

The 2025 National Security Strategy now takes that same civilisational lens and writes it into official US doctrine:

• Europe is framed as facing “civilizational erasure,” with migration, EU institutions and “cratering birthrates” treated as existential threats. (Wikipedia)

• “Patriotic European parties” are singled out as a hopeful sign. (Wikipedia)

• Washington openly declares it will “cultivate resistance” to Europe’s current trajectory within European nations.

That’s not just a policy shift; it’s Bannon’s and Dugin’s civilisation war framing moving from the fringe to the front page of US strategy – built on an ideological foundation poured by Dugin, financed by Malofeev, and blooded by Strelkov in Ukraine.

On 26 November 2025, Steve Bannon used his War Room show to sketch a very different foreign-policy map. In the auto-generated transcript of episode 4954 on ListenNotes, he describes Russia as a “devoutly Christian nation” and “our true ally” in the Second World War, urging the United States to stop “kowtowing” to “feckless” European states and instead “get in business with those guys” – Moscow.

A guest in the same segment pushes the theological frame further: the US security establishment supposedly does not want America to declare itself a Christian nation, and does not want it to partner with “another deeply Christian nation, Orthodox Christianity, Russia”.

That rhetoric is important not just because it’s provocative, but because it maps closely onto the worldview of Alexander Dugin – the Russian ultra-nationalist whose “Eurasianist” politics casts the world as a clash between a liberal Atlantic order and a counter-bloc built on tradition, hierarchy and hostility to modern liberalism.

And Dugin is not just a distant parallel — but an active factor in Bannon’s secret conversations with the sex trafficker and disgraced financier Jeffery Epstein

Rome, Epstein, the Senate – and Dugin

In Dinner with Mr Brexit: Bannon’s European Revolution – Planned with Farage, Backed by Epstein for Byline Times, I showed how Bannon’s European “Movement” – marketed as a loose hub for nationalist parties – sat on top of a Brussels legal shell already created by figures close to Nigel Farage.

Steve Bannon and Jeffrey Epstein were in frequent contact, with Epstein offering introductions, logistics and advice on the architecture of Bannon’s “international arrangements”: how to use opaque US non-profit and media structures to minimise foreign-agent transparency.

Inside that story sits a crossover that matters for this “Christian Russia” line. After an intense period of networking in Europe, Bannon sat down for an eight-and-a-half-hour interview with the US Senate Intelligence Committee during its inquiry into Russian interference and active measures.

Later, in messages I obtained and reported in that piece, Epstein presses Bannon on who the Senators actually asked about. Bannon replies that only one Russian ideologue was named to him: Alexander Dugin.

At roughly the same time, ethnographer Benjamin Teitelbaum’s book War for Eternity documents a long, intense meeting in Rome between Bannon and Dugin, running to several hours and revolving around traditionalism, geopolitics and the possibility of a shared project.

In my Substack piece The Apocalypse Network: Dugin, Bannon, Thiel and the Media Machinery of the Dark Enlightenment, I treated this Rome encounter as a key moment in the convergence between Putinism and Trumpism: a meeting of minds around media, metaphysics and power.

None of this proves command-and-control or a Kremlin chain of command. A meeting is a meeting; a Senate line of questioning is not a verdict. But it does establish something concrete:

Dugin was close enough and important enough to Bannon’s world to merit explicit attention from US counter-intelligence investigators – and to surface in a private channel between Bannon and Epstein.

Once you know that, Bannon’s “Christian Russia” pitch looks much less like random theatre and much more like the public-facing expression of a coherent ideological alignment.

Dugin’s “Common Enemy” Logic – and Bannon’s Version

Dugin’s geopolitics is built around coalition by antagonism: you build alliances not primarily around shared liberal norms, but around a shared enemy. In Foundations of Geopolitics, as summarised by Stanford’s Europe Center in its briefing on Aleksandr Dugin’s Foundations of Geopolitics, Eurasian strategy is framed around the “principle of a common enemy [the United States]”, explicitly rejecting Atlanticism and US strategic control, and rejecting liberal markets and universalist rights as the civilisational glue of world order.

What matters here is the logic rather than the fine print. In Dugin’s vision:

• The US-led liberal order is not a flawed but reformable system; it is the central adversary.

• Atlantic institutions – NATO, the EU, the broader “West” – are structures of domination to be undermined.

• Alliances with other states are justified by their shared hostility to that Atlantic liberalism, not by convergence on democratic norms.

If you listen back to Bannon’s “devoutly Christian Russia” segment with that in mind, it snaps into focus. He does not try to persuade viewers that Russia’s conduct in Ukraine or its domestic repression are misunderstood. Instead, he redraws the axis of conflict:

• Russia is reclassified as a spiritual ally, because it is supposedly “devoutly Christian” and historically the “true ally” that lost twenty-five million soldiers in the war against Hitler.

• Western Europe is recast as a bloc of “feckless… atheistic” states who “surrendered” and now free-ride on US power.

• The real obstacle to a Christian-civilisational alignment with Russia is not Putin but the US security establishment – the intelligence agencies and “deep state” that, the guest claims, will not allow America to proclaim itself Christian or “partner with another deeply Christian nation”.

The Duginist move is the same: the primary enemy is liberal Atlanticism itself, external and internal, embodied in Brussels, Washington and the nexus of security and foreign-policy elites. Russia’s value is not its behaviour but its utility as a pole of anti-liberal identity. American and Russian conservative projects are invited to recognise each other as partners in a civilisational war against the shared enemy of modern liberalism.

Fourth Political Theory meets Fourth Turning

In The Apocalypse Network, I argued that by the mid-2010s, two “fourth” doctrines had effectively fused in the same ecosystem.

Dugin’s Fourth Political Theory tries to move beyond liberalism, communism and fascism into a new ideological synthesis rooted in tradition and metaphysics – a politics with spiritual “verticality” rather than rights-based universalism. Bannon’s beloved Fourth Turning thesis, drawn from William Strauss and Neil Howe, treats history as a series of generational cycles culminating in crisis “turnings” when institutions break down and a new order is born. For Bannon, the coming crisis is not something to be avoided; it is the necessary purgation through which national renewal will emerge.

Put together, these “fourths” become a single apocalyptic engine:

• Dugin supplies the metaphysical war: a planetary struggle against a degenerate Atlantic order, framed in terms of tradition vs modernity, belief vs nihilism.

• Bannon supplies the historical timetable: a looming crisis in which existing institutions must collapse or be remade.

Seen through that lens, the “Christian Russia” turn is not just foreign-policy revisionism. It is a signal about where the lines of the final conflict are supposed to run. Liberal democracy – including the post-war European architecture and the US security state – is repositioned as the enemy of providential history. Russia, despite its wars, assassinations and information operations, is offered a path back into grace as a spiritual partner in the coming “turn”, so long as it situates itself against the Atlantic liberal order.

What Bannon’s “Christian Russia” line is really doing

Taken together, three elements line up:

• A documented relationship between Bannon and Dugin – the Rome meetings, extended conversations, and Dugin’s name surfacing in my evidence about Bannon’s exchanges with Epstein and his Senate Intelligence appearance.

• A Duginist blueprint that calls for building Eurasian alliances around a common enemy – the US-led liberal order – and repudiating Atlantic institutions and liberal markets as civilisational glue.

• A War Room performance that reclassifies Russia as a devout Christian ally and Western Europe and the US security establishment as the real problem, and that treats institutional resistance to this realignment as proof of elite illegitimacy.

That is why the “Christian Russia” segment cannot be filed away as mere trolling. It is part of an ideological project that:

• Tries to normalise strategic partnership with an authoritarian adversary on the basis of faith and civilisation.

• Works to delegitimise NATO and the EU by portraying them as spiritually hollow and historically unworthy.

• Recasts the US security state as the domestic arm of the liberal enemy, obstructing a Christian-civilisational reconciliation with Moscow.

• Embeds all of this in a semi-theological story of crisis and renewal, in which the destruction of the existing liberal order is not a risk but a destiny.

Once you see that structure – and once you place Dugin inside Bannon’s real network rather than on a bookshelf in the background – the November 2025 broadcast reads less like an odd outburst and more like Bannon finally coming clean about the deeper alignment…

A public rehearsal of his alliance with Putin’s fake holy Russia, in which the Kremlin’s authoritarian project is washed in Christian language and sold back to American audiences as the will of history and the will of God.

For more than a decade, a particular kind of “peace plan” for Ukraine has kept reappearing in and around Trumpworld and the Kremlin. The details change, but the structure stays eerily constant:

1. Russia keeps the land it grabbed (or more).

2. Ukraine is pushed into “neutrality” and demilitarisation.

3. Western sanctions are softened or reversed.

4. A small circle of intermediaries gets access to big money – in energy, real estate, reconstruction, or frozen Russian assets.

What is sold to the public as peace is, in practice, an attempt to turn Russian aggression into an asset class – a pay-off for war, with financial sweeteners for the brokers in between.

You can see that pattern evolving across four key initiatives:

1. Paul Manafort & Konstantin Kilimnik’s “Mariupol plan”

2. The Giuliani orbit’s “piece plan” and the Frank Project

3. Viktor Medvedchuk’s Donbas autonomy plan and its bribed messengers in Brussels

4. The current Witkoff–Dmitriev 28-point peace plan built around frozen Russian assets

Taken together, they look less like diplomacy, and more like bribery disguised as peace.

1. Prototype: Manafort, Kilimnik and the Mariupol Plan

The template emerges around Trump’s first run for president.

In 2016, Donald Trump’s campaign chair Paul Manafort and his long-time fixer Konstantin Kilimnik – a political operative with a GRU-linked background – begin discussing what Kilimnik later calls the “Mariupol plan”. In a 2017 interview with RFE/RL and follow-up conversations, Kilimnik outlines a proposal to:

• Replace the Minsk and Normandy formats with a new process.

• Bring disgraced ex-president Viktor Yanukovych back from exile in Russia.

• Install him as leader of a special entity covering Donetsk and Luhansk – a pseudo-state carved out of Ukraine’s industrial east.

As RFE/RL’s broader survey of “everyone’s peace plans” put it, this was already a land-grab smuggled inside the language of diplomacy.

The U.S. Senate Intelligence Committee’s Volume 5 on Russian interference later documented how Manafort and Kilimnik met on 2 August 2016 and kept communicating about a redacted “issue” until March 2018, while Kilimnik was assessed as a Russian intelligence officer in his own right. The same meeting saw Manafort hand over internal Trump polling data to be passed to pro-Russian Ukrainian politicians. The report is explicit that this created “a grave counterintelligence threat”.

A later court filing revealed that in February 2018 Manafort was still working on a file titled “New initiative for Peace copy” on his computer – one of the exhibits showing ongoing collaboration with Kilimnik on Ukraine while Mueller was investigating him.

The structure is visible even at this early stage:

• Concession: carve out Donbas as a semi-detached, Kremlin-controlled entity under Yanukovych.

• Reward: the prospect of sanctions relief, and a way for Manafort to mend relations with Russian-aligned oligarchs to whom he owed millions.

• Political cover: sell it in Washington as “peace”, “decentralisation” and a way to end a “proxy war” with Russia.

2. Giuliani World: The “Piece Plan” and the Frank Project

The second strand runs through Trump’s personal lawyers and business associates – Michael Cohen at first, Rudy Giuliani later – and is reconstructed in detail in Robert Waldeck’s Byline Times investigation, “Ukraine’s Pivotal Role in the Trump-Putin Deal”.

Two elements matter here:

2.1 Artemenko–Cohen “piece plan”

On the eve of Trump’s inauguration:

• Pro-Trump Ukrainian MP Andrii Artemenko meets Michael Cohen and Felix Sater in New York with a one-page “peace plan”.

• Cohen then delivers the plan to incoming National Security Adviser Michael Flynn.

The document resurfaced publicly when Cohen later handed it to Congress; journalist Paul Niland analysed it in “Vladimir Putin’s ‘Piece’ Plan for Ukraine Exposes Seven Years of Deceit”. It proposed:

• De facto recognition (or a long-term “lease”) of Russia’s annexation of Crimea.

• A managed “withdrawal” from parts of Donbas, framed within the Minsk agreements.

• Sanctions relief for Russia.

Niland called it a “piece plan”, not a peace plan – because it simply set out which piece of Ukraine Putin intended to retain.

The Artemenko plan was accompanied by alleged kompromat on President Petro Poroshenko, which reporting later traced back to fugitive oligarch Oleksandr Onyshchenko – again, using anti-corruption claims as a transactional instrument in a geopolitical deal.

2.2 Giuliani’s business channel and the Frank Project

At the same time, Giuliani’s business associates Lev Parnas and David Correia were stitching together a real-estate and donations pipeline that plugged directly into Ukrainian officialdom. Waldeck shows that:

• In September 2016, Parnas and Correia entered a Florida real-estate venture that needed foreign capital; their key partner was Roman Nasirov, then head of Ukraine’s tax service and an ally of Poroshenko.

• On 16 December 2016, Parnas introduced Nasirov to President-elect Trump at Mar-a-Lago. Days later, Parnas’s development entity secured a $10 million loan from a company linked to another pro-Poroshenko politician.

This business channel overlapped with what Manafort called the “Frank Project” – a post-election initiative in which, according to Waldeck, Manafort tried to push a Minsk-based settlement on Ukraine via informal contacts with Poroshenko’s team and Western envoys.

By early 2017, you therefore had two versions of the same basic idea hitting the Trump inner circle at once:

• Manafort/Kilimnik’s Mariupol plan (Yanukovych-led Donbas pseudo-state, sanctions relief).

• Artemenko/Cohen’s “piece plan” (Crimea effectively ceded, Donbas “stabilised”, sanctions relief).

Both implemented Moscow’s objectives; both were marketed as “peace”; both were entangled with business deals and kompromat, routed through Trump’s personal lawyers and their associates.

3. Nathan Gill and Medvedchuk’s Donbas Autonomy Plan

If Manafort and Giuliani were channelling ideas into Washington, Viktor Medvedchuk – Putin’s closest ally in Ukraine, whose daughter has Putin as godfather – was the domestic salesman.

By early 2019, Medvedchuk and his Opposition Platform–For Life party were openly promoting a “peace plan” for Donbas. In January that year, he proposed that the occupied eastern region should receive autonomous status within Ukraine, with its own parliament and government, and that negotiations should take place between Kyiv, Donetsk, Luhansk and Moscow. Ukraine’s prosecutor-general promptly opened a treason investigation, arguing this plan would consolidate occupation and violate territorial integrity – as covered at the time by outlets such as Newsweek and the Kyiv Post.

Subsequent reporting showed Medvedchuk’s political and media empire functioning as a conveyor belt for Russian narratives, something explored in depth by pieces like openDemocracy’s profile and the Kyiv Independent’s explainer on his later arrest and treason indictments in 2021–22, including allegations of extracting natural resources in occupied Crimea (Kyiv Independent explainer).

Then, in 2025, the bribery element finally became impossible to ignore.

Court documents in R v Nathan Gill – a former UKIP and Brexit Party MEP – show that Medvedchuk’s close associate Oleh Voloshyn paid Gill thousands of euros between December 2018 and July 2019 to promote Medvedchuk’s messaging in the European Parliament. The official sentencing remarks (PDF: R v Nathan Gill) and a series of investigations, including my own “Nathan Gill, Voloshyn and the Kremlin’s European Network”, document how:

• Gill made scripted speeches defending Medvedchuk’s TV channels and attacking the Ukrainian government.

• He organised a July 2019 event in the European Parliament at which Medvedchuk presented his “peace plan for Donbas” to MEPs from multiple EU states.

• Voloshyn promised Gill around $13,000 and €4,000 for his work promoting the plan and related media narratives.

The Brussels Times’ coverage notes that the very next day, Medvedchuk went to the Kremlin to brief Putin, boasting that he had presented his plan to “newly-elected European deputies” and implying that the event was part of a wider influence operation.

By 2025, Gill had been sentenced to more than ten years in prison for bribery, with law-enforcement summaries (for example, from Counter Terrorism Policing) and international coverage (e.g. Euromaidan Press) all underlining the same point:

A Western politician was paid to promote a Kremlin-designed “peace plan” for Donbas.

With Medvedchuk, the template tightens:

• Concession: formalise a Kremlin-aligned, “autonomous” Donbas in Ukrainian law.

• Reward: alleged personal enrichment through Crimea resource schemes and a network of bribed or incentivised foreign politicians to market the plan.

• Amplification: clean it up for Western audiences via the European Parliament, Brussels think-tank events, and sympathetic media.

4. Witkoff, Dmitriev and the 28-Point Plan: Make Money, Not War

The Witkoff plan is the latest – and most brazen – iteration of this model, updated for the full-scale war that began in 2022.

According to Reuters, Le Monde, The Wall Street Journal and others, the picture looks like this:

• In October 2025, Trump envoy and real-estate developer Steve Witkoff meets Kirill Dmitriev, head of the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF), in Miami, alongside Jared Kushner and Ukrainian national security chief Rustem Umerov.

• Over several days, they work on a 28-point U.S. peace plan.

• Reuters later reports that the plan “drew from a Russian document” – a “non-paper” the Kremlin had handed the Trump White House outlining concessions Russia wanted from Ukraine (Reuters).

The initial draft, as described in the Wall Street Journal’s investigation “Make Money Not War: Trump’s Real Plan for Peace in Ukraine” and subsequent commentary (WSJ, “Ukraine and the Off-Point Peace Plan”; Le Monde’s analysis of Dmitriev’s role), included:

• Freezing the current front lines and treating them as de facto borders in many areas.

• Recognising Russia’s hold over Crimea, Donetsk, Luhansk and other occupied territories.

• Capping the size of Ukraine’s armed forces and barring it from joining NATO.

• Granting amnesty to leaders on both sides.

Those points alone would amount to codifying the results of aggression – a long-term strategic victory for the Kremlin.

But the business core of the plan is even more explicit:

• Use roughly $300 billion in frozen Russian central bank assets as a pool for U.S.–Russian joint ventures, including in Ukraine and possibly the Arctic.

• Channel part of that money into “reconstruction” contracts for U.S. and Russian firms, effectively turning sanctions into an investment swap.

• Create a framework where Western companies profit from rebuilding territory Russia has destroyed, while Russia regains leverage via shared projects.

A Washington Post column described this as “realpolitik on steroids”, noting that the draft envisaged the U.S. taking up to 50% of profits from certain uses of frozen Russian assets and pressing Ukraine to agree under threat of losing American support (Washington Post analysis).

Le Monde’s overview of the plan’s fallout – “Uncertainties surrounding peace plan put Ukraine in a complicated spot” – notes that after an outcry in Kyiv and European capitals, the 28 points were trimmed to 19. But the logic of the plan remained: trade Ukrainian territory and sovereignty for a package of economic incentives and business opportunities, some of them funded by the very sanctions meant to punish Russia.

Once again:

• Concession: legitimise Russia’s occupation and constrain Ukraine’s security and alliances.

• Reward: turn frozen assets and reconstruction into a profit-sharing scheme for Russian and Western elites.

• Branding: sell it as a “business-driven peace” – the headline on the WSJ piece was literally “Make Money Not War”.

5. A Pattern: When “Peace” Means Paying for Aggression

Across all four initiatives, the same structure recurs:

1. The starting point is Moscow’s map.

   • The Mariupol plan carves out a Yanukovych-led Donbas pseudo-state (RFE/RL).

   • The Artemenko/Cohen “piece plan” locks in Russia’s hold over Crimea and key parts of Donbas (Niland, Byline Times).

   • Medvedchuk’s plan seeks an “autonomous” Donbas with its own institutions and a direct line to Moscow (Newsweek, Meduza).

   • The Witkoff–Dmitriev plan proposes freezing front lines, recognising Russian control of vast territories and limiting Ukraine’s NATO and military options (Reuters, WSJ).

2. The “peace” is coupled to money or material advantage for the brokers.

   • Manafort is trying to salvage his standing with Russian-aligned oligarchs while pushing a settlement that benefits Moscow (Senate Intel Vol. 5).

   • Giuliani’s circle fuses peace lobbying with real-estate ventures, million-dollar loans and a stream of kompromat traded as leverage (Waldeck, Byline Times).

   • Medvedchuk’s network pays politicians like Nathan Gill to promote his “peace plan” inside the EU institutions, while he faces separate treason charges over resource schemes in occupied Crimea (Byline Times; Kyiv Independent).

   • The Witkoff plan explicitly tries to convert frozen Russian assets into joint ventures and reconstruction contracts involving U.S. and Russian elites (WSJ, Le Monde).

3. The costs are externalised onto Ukrainians.

• Territorial loss, demographic cleansing, war crimes and the destruction of infrastructure are treated as negotiable; the people living under occupation become bargaining chips in someone else’s ledger.

4. The language of peace is weaponised as cover

• Each scheme presents itself as “realistic compromise” or “business-minded peace”. In practice, each offers to pay off the aggressor and the intermediaries, in exchange for Ukrainians accepting a diminished, partitioned state.

• From that perspective, “Bribery Disguised as Peace” is not just a moral judgement but a structural description of how these plans function:

• The bribes flow upwards: to Moscow, to Western business elites, and to the go-betweens who stand to profit.

• The “peace” messaging flows outwards: at Western publics who are told that if Ukraine just gives up “a bit of territory”, the war will end.

What is consistently missing is the voice of the people whose country is on the table. Ukrainian civil society figures and commentators like Paul Niland have repeatedly argued that any lasting settlement has to start from Ukrainian consent and international law, not a carve-up dictated by Russia and monetised by middlemen.

Seen across this long arc – from the Mariupol plan, through the Artemenko/Cohen “piece plan” and Medvedchuk’s Donbas autonomy push, to the Witkoff business-first blueprint – the danger is clear:

If the West accepts bribery disguised as peace, it normalises conquest as a viable investment strategy.

A ‘Traitor’ at the ‘Very Top of Reform’

With the news that a poll to call for a public inquiry has reached a sufficient number to be considered for Parliamentary debate, we might be inching closer to a full reckoning with the extensive ‘active measures’ and hybrid economic information war Vladimir Putin has waged against the UK since 2012.

The 10½ year jail sentence Nathan Gill, former UKIP and Brexit Party MEP and Welsh leader of Reform UK, for taking Kremlin-linked bribes has turned an intelligence concern into a criminal conviction, and activated a live constitutional question.

Nigel Farage’s wingman in Strasbourg accepted around £40,000 to push pro-Kremlin lines in the European Parliament. One of Gill’s bribes was to organise a roundtable for ‘Putin’s Man in Ukraine’, Viktor Medvedchuk, who was also the ultimate payee of the Kremlin gold. This puts Nigel Farage firmly in the frame, directly linking one of his top aides to one of Vladimir Putin’s.

In a formal party statement, Liberal Democrat leader Ed Davey called Gill “a traitor … at the very top of Reform UK, aiding and abetting a foreign adversary” and branded Farage’s party “a danger to national security”.

But if you think this is bad, think about our former Prime Minister Boris Johnson and the troubling high-level Russian connections he had over many years.

Brexit and Blaming the Victim

As well as being the figureheads of their respective Brexit campaigns, Nigel Farage and Boris Johnson share another thing in common: as Russia launched its first phase of war against Ukraine in 2014, they both bizarrely blamed the EU for the conflict.

Back at the time of the Crimea land-grab, in March 2014, Farage told the press and the European Parliament that the EU had “poked the Russian bear with a stick” by encouraging Ukrainians to topple Yanukovych, accusing Brussels of a “militarist and expansionist” policy that had provoked the crisis in Ukraine.

Nathan Gill echoed his leader’s defence of Putin a few months later, in his maiden speech to the European Parliament in September 2014, warning that an association agreement between Ukraine and the EU would “lead to war”, and insisting that “what you are doing today is throwing petrol onto the bonfire which the EU lit.”

Nigel Farage went on to head the Leave EU campaign a year later.

The other leading ‘leave’ campaigner, Boris Johnson, directly echoed this two years later, in May 2016, Boris Johnson told reporters that “if you want an example of EU foreign policy-making on the hoof, and the EU’s pretensions to running a defence policy that have caused real trouble, then look at what has happened in Ukraine”.

How did it come about that both leading Brexiters were also Putin cheerleaders?

From Nalobin to Farage: the long Russian courtship of the Tory right

As Carole Cadwalladr and I documented in the award-winning Sergei and the Westminster Spy Ring, the Kremlin was trying to suborn the Conservative Party and UKIP long before Gill was taking envelopes of cash from Medvedchuk’s bagman.

In late 2010, Russian-born Tory activist Sergei Cristo says he was approached at the Carlton Club by Sergey Nalobin, a first secretary at the Russian embassy and son of a KGB/FSB general, with an offer that Russian companies that would like to “contribute to the Conservative Party”. An illegal act, like Gill’s bungs.

Just as interestingly, Nalobin quizzed Cristo about the rivalry between the then Prime Minister, David Cameron, and his former Eton, Oxford and Bullingdon Club contemporary, the then Mayor of London, Boris Johnson.

Our podcast revealed the various official Russian Embassy attempt to infiltrate British right-wing politicians, first through Conservative Friends of Russia, and then its successor, the Westminster Russia Forum. Nalobin was joined by a second Russian spy, Alexander Udod, who approached Nigel Farage’s UKIP. Both Nalobin and Udod were expelled from the UK.

But by 2012, Boris Johnson already had his own Russian connections.

Enter the Lebedevs: Johnson’s Russian Entanglement

As Adam Bienkov documents in Byline Times, Boris Johnson’s association with media baron Evgeny Lebedev and Evgeny’s father, Alexander Lebedev, a former KGB colonel, goes back to 2009.

Under Lebedev’s ownership, the Standard became even more closely aligned with Johnson, loudly backing his re-election in 2012 and then his return to national politics.

It was a two-way process. Lebedev lobbied the mayor to support a glitzy new Russian arts festival in London that, according to the official minutes, was designed to “transform global perceptions” of Russia – with Lebedev promising to “lead discussions” with the Kremlin and secure “substantial support from the Russian Government”.

By this time, as John Sweeney reported, also in Byline Times, Johnson was a regular guest at the Lebedevs’ West London home and at Palazzo Terranova, the family’s Umbrian villa near Perugia. As foreign secretary and later prime minister, he continued to attend their famously hedonistic parties.

The Lebedevs did not donate cash to the Conservative Party, but they offered something arguably more valuable: access, status and a platform.

By 2020, Johnson had used his power as prime minister to make Evgeny Lebedev Baron Lebedev, of Hampton in the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames and of Siberia in the Russian Federation –despite security service concerns later revealed by the Channel 4 film Boris, the Lord and the Russian Spy and an accompanying OCCRP investigation.

But the real source of concern was not the son but the father. Despite constant claims to be a ‘dissident’ who fell out with Putin, by the time Boris Johnson was a Brexit figurehead, the former KGB colonel was back in Putin’s inner circle.

Lebedev Sr in Crimea – and the Surkov leaks

By 2014, when Putin invaded Eastern Ukraine and forcibly annexed Crimea at the barrel of a gun, Alexander Lebedev was one of the biggest investors in the peninsula.

Lebedev has for years owned and developed hotel and resort assets in Alushta, on the Crimean coast, including the “Almond Grove” complex and other hotels held via Cypriot offshore companies – businesses that continued after Russia’s 2014 annexation despite EU sanctions on Crimea-related investments.

Lebedev was made an “honorary citizen of Alushta” in 2012 for his investments and philanthropy on the peninsula, and boasted of taking a major role in renovating theatres and cultural sites in occupied Crimea.

The fact that Lebedev was back in Putin’s inner circle is confirmed by the “Surkov Files” surfaced by OCCRP and partners. They revealed that just weeks after Russia seized Crimea, Alexander Lebedev was writing directly to Sergei Ivanov, then chief of staff to Vladimir Putin, proposing to organise discounted “group vacations” in Crimean resorts for employees of the Russian defence ministry, interior ministry and major state companies.

He followed up with a letter to Vladislav Surkov, the Kremlin’s chief ideologist and architect of the Donbas proxy war, offering to host a peace conference in a Crimean theatre whose restoration he had financed.

Russian state and local media covered the event in 2017, with Lebedev hosting the conference with Sergey Aksyonov, the Russian-installed “head” of the region, and foreign ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova.

This is not the profile of a retired, politically disengaged ex-spy turned businessman. It is the profile of an oligarch active in Putin’s inner circle at the very moment Russia was redrawing Europe’s borders by force.

And it is during this period that his connections to the then Foreign Secretary, Boris Johnson, become the most intense.

Sweeney’s Scoop: Italian Intelligence and the Umbrian ‘X-Rated’ Parties

Writing for Byline Times in October 2021, John Sweeney first revealed the concern of the Italian intelligence services over Alexander Lebedev, and the two castles he owned in Umbria to host lavish parties, particularly for British politicians

Drawing on an anonymous report from Italy’s intelligence services and early drafts of the book Oligarchi by Italian investigative journalist Jacopo Iacoboni, Sweeney explained how Italian intelligence services:

• Questioned whether Alexander Lebedev had ever really left the KGB, noting that his resignation was considered “not quite clear” and that he continued to attend annual KGB meetings at the Kremlin.

• Warned that his name had been linked to “espionage and interference” operations.

• Described the Villa Terranova parties as “X-rated”, raising the risk of kompromat in an environment where senior British politicians and Russian elites mingled with minimal security.

Johnson, as both mayor and foreign secretary, had attended the villas’ parties – sometimes leaving his police protection behind in Britain, an extraordinary breach of protocol for a minister handling sensitive intelligence on Russia.

Johnson was photographed “worse for wear” by a member of the public at Perugia airport at a particularly important moment in late April 2018, when the hostility between Russia and the UK reached a new peak.

In March 2018, GRU officers used the nerve agent Novichok in Salisbury to target former spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia. The attack triggered a major NATO and EU diplomatic response.

On 27 April 2018, foreign ministers met in Brussels, with Johnson publicly urging allies to stand firm against Russian “malign activity”. The next day, instead of returning to London, Johnson flew alone to Perugia and on to Palazzo Terranova, without his Foreign Office officials or police bodyguards.

Paul Caruana Galizia at Tortoise discovered the real reason for this strange unofficial trip: Alexander Lebedev tried to set up a secret, unmonitored phone call between Johnson and Russian foreign minister Sergei Lavrov, specifically to discuss the nerve agent attack on Salisbury – bypassing British officials and secure channels. According to Caruana Galizia’s sources, the call never took place only because Johnson overslept.

Later, in front of the Liaison Committee, Johnson famously told MPs that “as far as [he was] aware” no government business was discussed at the villa – a formulation that now looks, at best, economical.

In December 2019, on the night he celebrated his General Election victory, Prime Minister Boris Johnson chose to avoid the traditional Downing Street event and instead chose to attend Alexander Lebedev’s lavish 60th Birthday Party.

In May 2022, the Canadian Government sanctioned Alexander Lebedev because it judged that he is part of Vladimir Putin’s inner circle and had directly enabled Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

From Profumo to Palazzo Terranova

In 1963, John Profumo, the Conservative Secretary of State for War, resigned after lying to Parliament about an affair with Christine Keeler, who was also involved with Yevgeny Ivanov, a Soviet naval attaché suspected of intelligence links. The scandal helped bring down the Conservative Government of the time.

The Johnson Lebedev story is even more explosive. From 2016, during his tenure as Foreign Secretary with oversight of the British secret intelligence services MI6 and GCHQ, Boris Johnson was constantly — often covertly — in contact with a senior member of Russia’s political and espionage elite, in potentially compromising social circumstances. At stake was the biggest conflict in Europe for 80 years.

This makes Nathan Gill’s activities look peripheral.

Though Boris Johnson later became a stalwart defender of Ukraine after the full invasion in 2022, his role in providing ideological support for Putin as a leading Brexiter, just like Nigel Farage, against the EU, is on the record. So is Russian intervention in the contentious and epochal EU referendum.

But how and why Britain’s security was so compromised during a crucial era of conflict needs to be investigated urgently by a public inquiry to protect any future elections.

For nearly a decade, sceptics have dismissed allegations that Steve Bannon’s Cambridge Analytica and Evgeny Prigozhin’s troll farms successfully intervened in the Brexit referendum and Trump’s first presidential election in 2016. But a new study shows how effective their innovations in digital psychological warfare really were .

I. The Experiment That Finally Measured Online Radicalisation

The new X (formerly Twitter) field experiment reported by The Guardian —“Partisan X posts increase political polarisation among users, research finds” (27 Nov 2025) — finally gives us causal proof of online radicalisation:

The study itself, by Piccardi, Saveski et al., was published in Science (2024):

What they did:

• Recruited ~1,300 consenting X users.

• Used an AI classifier to detect posts expressing anti-democratic attitudes and partisan animosity.

• Nudged some users’ feeds to show slightly more of this content, and others slightly less.

What happened:

• Users exposed to more hostile content became more polarised within days, measurable on the 0–100 “feeling thermometer”.

• Hostility toward the opposite party rose by just over 2 points — the same amount U.S. politics polarised between 1978 and 2020.

• Reducing hostile content reversed some of that effect.

For the first time, we have a controlled, causal measurement of the psychological mechanism that CA and the IRA exploited.

II. Cambridge Analytica: Engineering Hostility by Design

Cambridge Analytica’s methods were publicly exposed by Christopher Wylie. His memoir Mindfck* describes exactly how CA built self-contained radicalisation ecosystems using stolen Facebook data:

The British parliamentary inquiry into CA, published by the DCMS Committee, documented the firm’s claims to possess “5,000 data points on every American voter”:

CA’s core techniques mirrored the X experiment:

• Fake Facebook groups (“Smith County Patriots”, “I Love My Country”).

• Inflammatory content stressing grievances, paranoia, racial tension.

• Psychometric profiling based on the Facebook data taken through Aleksandr Kogan’s app.

• Targeted A/B testing to find the most emotionally activating messages.

• Offline activation — coffee shop meetups designed to turn online grievance into embodied camaraderie.

It was an analogue version of what the X experiment did algorithmically.

III. Aleksandr Kogan’s Dark Triad Pipeline

Dr Aleksandr Kogan, the Cambridge academic who harvested the Facebook data for CA, was simultaneously conducting Russian-funded research at St Petersburg State University on:

• dark-triad personality traits (narcissism, Machiavellianism, psychopathy),

• online trolling and cyberbullying,

• political expression among authoritarian-leaning users.

The Guardian exposed this link in 2018: Kogan lectured in Russia on“New Methods of Communication as an Effective Political Instrument” — effectively, how psychometric profiling could be used as political influence.

His Russian research team even used:

“data of Facebook users from Russia and the USA … by means of a special web-application”.

Inside Cambridge Analytica, SCL’s psychologists then replicated this authoritarian-susceptibility research to identify groups most reactive to hostile messaging.

The X study shows that increasing exposure to hostile, anti-democratic cues produces measurable affective polarisation in days. Kogan’s work shows who is most vulnerable to those cues.

IV. The IRA: AAPA (Anti-Democratic & Partisan Animosity) at Full Scale

Everything CA built manually, the Internet Research Agency (IRA) deployed at industrial scale.

The Mueller Report (Vol. I) lays out how the IRA created entire ecosystems of false US personas:

They included:

• Blacktivist

• Being Patriotic

• Army of Jesus

• Heart of Texas

Each page was tailored with the same kind of content the 2024 study tested:

• hostility toward political opponents,

• anti-democratic rhetoric (“the system is rigged”),

• identity conflict,

• emotional escalation (fear, rage, betrayal).

And the IRA went further:

• Offline activation of rallies and counter-rallies in the U.S. (Houston 2016).

• Amplification of GRU hack-and-leak operations, feeding their content pipeline with “evidence”.

The GRU indictments confirmed how stolen DNC/Podesta material was weaponised:

The new X study gives us the missing scientific overlay:

The IRA was not only spreading misinformation — it was administering a continuous AAPA-rich stimulus that we now know reliably increases polarisation.

V. Sam Patten: A Bridge Between CA and the Eastern Networks

Sam Patten — consultant, former Kazakhstan and Ukraine political operative, and longtime associate of Konstantin Kilimnik — joined CA after working for pro-Russian political parties in Ukraine.

The DOJ details his background here:

Under Patten’s watch in 2014, Cambridge Analytica’s Oregon field operation began running focus groups on Vladimir Putin, Crimea, and “strong leader” imagery — a startling early piece of evidence that CA was testing authoritarian cues on American voters.

Wylie’s account confirms these focus groups were real and unauthorised inside the company.

Patten and Kilimnik — the same Kilimnik later identified as a Russian intelligence officer by the Senate Intelligence Committee — had met years earlier in Moscow and worked together frequently.

The Senate Intelligence Committee, Vol. 5, describes Kilimnik as a “Russian intelligence officer” and calls the Manafort–Kilimnik relationship a “grave counterintelligence threat.”

VI. Nix, LUKOIL and SCL’s Covert Memo

Whistleblower Christopher Wylie revealed that CA CEO Alexander Nix personally sent LUKOIL CEO Vagit Alekperov a white paper outlining CA’s U.S. political microtargeting systems. He then told Wylie:

“They understand behavioural micro-targeting in elections … but they are failing to make the connection between voters and their consumers.”

SCL subsequently drafted a 2014 internal memo for Nix describing:

• “special intelligence services”,

• contracted ex-officers from Russian and other security services,

• large-scale fake social media persona networks,

• the ability to infiltrate opposition campaigns via “intelligence nets”.

That memo places CA/SCL squarely in the psy-ops / disinformation contracting market — not simply digital marketing.

VII. Security Exposure: Russian IP Addresses and Kogan’s Laptop

The UK Information Commissioner’s Office later concluded:

“Some of the systems linked to the investigation were accessed from IP addresses that resolve to Russia and other areas of the CIS.”

This is not proof of coordinated access.

But it confirms technical exposure.

Combined with the fact that:

• Nix told LUKOIL the Facebook dataset was with Kogan in Russia,

• Kogan travelled repeatedly to St Petersburg with his laptop,

• and Russian-state-linked grants funded some of his research,

then even a simple keylogger on Kogan’s device could have yielded the data CA used to model American voters. No hack of CA required.

VIII. The Scientific Picture: AAPA + Dark Triad = Radicalisation Engine

Put the pieces together:

• The X experiment proves that small increases in anti-democratic attitudes and partisan animosity (AAPA) content produce measurable polarisation in days.

• Cambridge Analytica built tailored AAPA micro-environments, targeted at high-susceptibility dark-triad and authoritarian profiles.

• Kogan’s Russian-funded research showed how to identify precisely those users most reactive to authoritarian cues.

• The IRA created a full-spectrum AAPA ecosystem, integrated with GRU disinformation.

• Nix’s outreach to LUKOIL and SCL’s internal memo show CA was selling something far beyond data analytics — it was selling a psychological warfare service.

• The ICO’s finding shows the technical systems were exposed to Russian IP access.

In short:

We now have the causal science to explain why Cambridge Analytica’s and the IRA’s techniques were so effective — and why the 2016 information environment spiralled into unprecedented levels of hostility and distrust.

The radicalisation pathway is now fully visible:

Behavioural profiling → Hostile-content exposure → Emotional shift → Identity hardening → Offline mobilisation.

IX. Conclusion

The debate around Cambridge Analytica and Russian influence once relied heavily on inference and circumstantial evidence.

But the new X experiment changes the landscape.

It shows that:

• hostile content exposure

• is not merely correlated with radicalisation —

• it causes it.

And CA and the IRA were not just flooding the zone.

They were doing it strategically, using psychometric profiling, dark-triad research, and identity warfare.

For the first time, we can say:

The psychological weapon used in 2016 is no longer mysterious.

We can now measure it — and we know it works.

In this, Putin was following the precedent set by Slobodan Milosevic in Kosovo in 1999 when he forcibly emptied the capital Pristina of its inhabitants, creating a humanitarian crisis and confounding a looming NATO intervention, as the refugees not only blocked the access routes for any ground forces, but were also mistaken for a Serbian army convoy and hit with air strikes.

In spring 2016, just before the EU referendum in the UK, NATO’s Supreme Allied Commander in Europe, General Philip Breedlove, warned that “Russia and the Assad regime are deliberately weaponizing migration… to overwhelm European structures and break European resolve.”

Leaked emails from Farage’s Leave.EU campaign not only revealed many undisclosed meetings with the Russian Embassy in London, but also discussed how to combat Breedlove’s criticisms and turn them to Russia’s favour.

As reported on Byline Times, Farage’s biggest funder, Arron Banks, proposed answering Breedlove with a press line claiming the “bigger problem has been Cameron weaponising Russia.” Campaign aides debated whether sending a letter of support to Ambassador Yakovenko would be “too overtly Russophile.

Two years previously, Nigel Farage had praised Putin as one of the politicians he most admired, and described his intervention in Syria as '“brilliant”.

Two years later, Farage’s campaign Leave.EU pushed a scare video built largely from RT clips and mislabelled a 2013 Cairo assault as “Europe,” later exposed by Channel 4 and summarised by the Independent, as inspired by Russian disinformation.

The emotive zenith came with Nigel Farage’s Breaking Point poster showing Syrian refugees in a queue.

At exactly the same time, other Russian agents were working with other European right-wing politicians on how Russia could provoke more migration to Europe from its unstable neighbours, and how they could weaponise it.

Syria: Where the Playbook Was Refined — and How Marsalek Got Involved

Russia’s direct intervention in Syria from late September 2015 escalated the bombing of opposition-held urban areas; UN/NGO monitors later catalogued unlawful attacks on civilians and medical facilities.

That escalation coincided with Europe’s record refugee flows in 2015, with more than 1.3 million asylum applications and more than 1 million sea arrivals, largely via Greece.

It is in this theatre that Jan Marsalek—the fugitive Wirecard COO—appears in the open record: a joint investigation by The Insider and Der Spiegel reports he visited Wagner units in Syria in 2017 with GRU handler Stanislav Petlinsky, recruited fighters for Libya, and channelled millions siphoned from Wirecard to Russian military operations in Syria/

Why it matters: Marsalek had money, access (Wagner/GRU), and a front-row view of how forced displacement could be turned into geopolitical leverage—precisely what NATO meant by “weaponising migration”,

Libya: Exporting the Tactic — and Boosting Far-Right Allies at Home

According to investigators, Marsalek had been recruited by Russian intelligence since at least 2010.

Even before Wirecard collapsed in 2020, Financial Times reporting showed Marsalek pitching a “humanitarian” Libya project around the same time as Brexit that sources said masked militia ambitions (FT profile, 2020).

A 2020 Tagesspiegel reported that Marsalek had been interested in Libya “for years,” investing since 2015, and envisaged a “military conversion programme” to train 15,000–20,000 militiamen as border guards to stop migrant flows—an idea he hoped Moscow could sell to the EU.

The Finanical Times’ Agent of Chaos podcast adds testimony that he sought to militarise border control under humanitarian cover. The Telegraph reported he planned to control a central Mediterranean migration corridor—a direct lever on the EU’s politics.

This Libyan vector dovetailed with Marsalek’s Austrian far-right orbit: studies and court-driven reporting place him in FPÖ/ultranationalist networks and the Austrian–Russian Friendship Society, with compromised Austrian officials (notably Egisto Ott) passing classified material.

The ICCT analysis links Marsalek’s Libya business interests, hiring of Russian mercenaries, and FPÖ pipelines, while European policy work warns that outsourcing border control to Libyan armed actors creates dependencies adversaries can exploit.

Wagner/Africa Corps in Libya: the Enabling Ecosystem

From 2018 onward, Wagner entrenched in eastern Libya, later re-badged by Moscow’s Defence Ministry as the Africa Corps after Yevgeny Prigozhin’s death.

UN experts flagged serious security threats from foreign fighters, including Wagner-linked units; OSINT has mapped Russian use of al-Khadim airbase and other sites as logistics hubs spanning the Sahel and Med .

In late 2023–2025, Western intelligence quoted by the Wall Street Journal said he was helping reconfigure Wagner’s African business for the Kremlin after Prigozhin’s death, an assessment echoed in subsequent briefings and reporting.

UK cases since 2024 describe him as a tasking figure for Russian spy networks, reinforcing the picture of a Kremlin-aligned implementer with African/Libyan lines of effort.

• Exported to Libya: He pursued militias and “border control” projects that would turn Libya’s central Med route into a pressure dial on Europe—aligning with Austrian far-right politics built on migration fear (FT; ICCT).

• Enabled by Wagner/Africa Corps: Russia’s para-state footprint in eastern Libya provides the infrastructure and deniability to make such leverage credible (Euronews; CTC Sentinel).

• Post-Prigozhin role: Marsalek is now reported to be one of the fixers helping Moscow re-tool Wagner’s African empire (WSJ).

Bottom line: The UK’s 2016 debate shows how “weaponised migration” moved from battlefield reality to political narrative. Marsalek—moving money, men, and messaging between Syria and Libya, and later Africa—is a case study in how that method was learned, financed, exported, and institutionalised within the Kremlin’s Wagner/Africa-Corps ecosystem.

What this means for Europe

1. Leverage at low cost. A few thousand operatives, control of airfields and coast nodes, and relationships with local strongmen can shape flows far beyond Libya’s borders — at minimal cost compared to conventional force.

2. Externalisation backfires. The more the EU outsources migration control to fragile or captured actors, the more it outsources leverage over its own politics (ECFR).

3. Hybrid synergy. Military footprint (Africa Corps) + proxy entrepreneurs (Marsalek) + information operations = plausible deniability and political impact in EU capitals.

For years, Jeffrey Epstein maintained the fiction of being a brilliant, if mysterious, Wall Street fixer. What recent document releases instead suggest is a man drawn repeatedly into the orbit of Vladimir Putin’s other financial system: the informal, quasi-state networks centred on the St Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF).

SPIEF presents itself as Russia’s answer to Davos. In reality, as multiple investigations — including those published by the Dossier Center — have documented, it operates as a tightly managed ecosystem where politics, intelligence, banking and soft power overlap. Foreign executives attending SPIEF are publicly courted for investment, privately harvested for information, and assessed for future utility.

Into this world, several figures long linked to Epstein — clients, business partners, and close associates — appear to slip with striking regularity. The pattern is now too clear to ignore.

A Kremlin Forum Disguised as an Investment Fair

SPIEF’s public façade is well known: keynote addresses from Putin, bilateral sessions with global leaders, and panel discussions featuring senior executives from companies still hungry for Russian markets even after 2014.

Less discussed is the forum’s operational structure. After the annexation of Crimea, SPIEF’s governing body was folded directly into the Presidential Administration via the Roscongress Foundation. This gave the Kremlin not just licence, but a mandate, to turn the event into a controlled environment for diplomatic showmanship and intelligence collection.

Western participation continued regardless. In 2016 the plenary included Matteo Renzi, Ban Ki-moon and Jean-Claude Juncker. In 2017, Indian PM Narendra Modi attended alongside senior American executives — Boeing, GE, Caterpillar, Exxon and Chevron — documented at the time by Forbes. By 2018, Emmanuel Macron and Shinzo Abe were on stage.

This is the platform into which several individuals from Epstein’s circle unexpectedly appear.

Ehud Barak: Epstein’s Business Partner on a SPIEF Stage

Former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak — Epstein’s long-time business associate — appears in the SPIEF 2015 photo archive as a speaker on knowledge-economy strategy. That presence is no longer merely a footnote. Newly released emails, published by Politico, show Epstein corresponding directly with Russian officials about Barak’s attendance and potential meetings with senior figures including Sergey Lavrov and SPIEF’s organiser, Sergei Belyakov.

Barak’s appearance indicates proximity not just to the forum but to its diplomatic machinery — and to the individuals shaping Russia’s international outreach.

Leon Black: From Epstein Client to Adviser on Russia’s Sovereign Wealth Vehicle

Leon Black, the billionaire founder of Apollo Global Management, was by far Epstein’s largest known client. He also sat on the international advisory board of the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF), the Kremlin’s sovereign wealth fund and a central pillar of SPIEF’s investment agenda.

A Reuters report from 2012 confirms Black participated in closed-door investment sessions with Putin during the forum. The presence of Epstein’s biggest client at the heart of Kremlin investment diplomacy places the financier’s network within touching distance of Russia’s state capital strategy.

Masha Bucher (née Drokova): From Nashi to Silicon Valley to SPIEF

An even stranger name appears in the SPIEF 2019 programme: “Maria Bucher, Founder, Day One Ventures (USA)”. This is Masha Drokova, once the press officer and star of Vladislav Surkov’s Nashi youth movement — a Kremlin-aligned organisation notorious for harassment of opposition figures and its role in online information operations.

Drokova moved to the US in the mid-2010s, reinvented herself as a tech investor, and maintained links to Russian AI companies such as NTechLab, creator of the facial-recognition tool FindFace — a system used by authorities to identify protesters, as documented by Meduza.

Her path — youth propagandist → Russian tech PR → Silicon Valley VC → SPIEF speaker — mirrors the permeability between Kremlin-aligned technology spheres and the Western innovation ecosystem. It also places her close to the broader networks around which Epstein moved

Svetlana “Lana” Pozhidaeva: Epstein’s Aide With SPIEF-Issued Credentials

One of the clearest bridges between Epstein and SPIEF comes through his Russian assistant Svetlana “Lana” Pozhidaeva. In 2014, Pozhidaeva secured a prestigious US O-1 “extraordinary ability” visa using a personal endorsement letter written by SPIEF’s then-chief, Sergei Belyakov, an FSB-trained former deputy minister.

The Dossier Center’s release of their email correspondence shows Belyakov formally describing Pozhidaeva as holding senior responsibilities within SPIEF — effectively elevating her from Epstein’s aide to someone with official Kremlin-endorsed status. Epstein simultaneously bankrolled her US-based NGO, Education Advance.

Pozhidaeva’s visa file places Epstein’s office directly inside Russia’s diplomatic and intelligence-adjacent structures.

Sergei Belyakov: Where Epstein’s Inbox Meets the Kremlin

Belyakov, the SPIEF organiser who supported Pozhidaeva’s visa, appears repeatedly in Epstein’s inner correspondence. The Dossier Center’s documents show the two men exchanging messages about sanctions, background checks, introductions to high-level Russian officials, and the strategic deployment of SPIEF’s prestige to advance Epstein’s interests.

Belyakov is a structurally significant figure: the FSB-trained gatekeeper of Russia’s most important influence forum, corresponding casually with Epstein about financial architecture and elite access.

The Financial Layer: Epstein’s BRIC-Coin Proposal to Russia

The most striking element of the document releases is not who appeared at SPIEF, but what Epstein offered to Russia. In early 2014, as Western sanctions hit after Crimea, Epstein emailed Belyakov proposing a new financial mechanism to help Russia evade economic isolation.

His plan included:

• the creation of a new international bank able to “lend nine times its reserves”;

• a BRIC-branded cryptocurrency — an early conceptual precursor to the BRICS digital currency models advanced years later;

• commodity-backed digital instruments linked to oil;

• and automated, computer-regulated “smart contracts” for cross-border settlement.

It reads as an early blueprint for Russia’s eventual de-dollarisation strategy. Epstein was not merely acquiring access; he was proposing an alternative financial architecture for a sanctioned Kremlin.

This sits uncomfortably alongside what unsealed suspicious activity reports reveal: Epstein’s accounts ran through Sberbank and Alfa Bank, two of the most strategically important Russian banks, both with long-standing roles at SPIEF and deep ties to the Kremlin.

When viewed together — Epstein’s proposals, his clients’ presence, his aide’s SPIEF credentials, and the banking trails — the picture is no longer diffuse. It is coherent.

A Single Operating System

SPIEF is not a neutral investment forum. It is the Kremlin’s influence-operating system. Its purpose is to merge foreign business with Russian political strategy, leveraging access, hospitality and prestige to extract information, build dependencies, and project Russia’s economic ambitions.

What the new material shows is that Epstein was not a distant figure skirting its edges. His clients appeared inside SPIEF. His assistant was credentialled by SPIEF’s director. His contacts belonged to the Russian tech and political networks surrounding it. His money passed through banks central to the forum’s operation. And his private proposals offered the Kremlin a model for a sanctions-proof financial future.

Epstein had long cultivated the image of a man who knew everyone. What the new evidence suggests is that among the people who knew him — and valued him — were those working inside the Kremlin’s most important platform for elite capture.
